MY 1951 8N IS STARTING TO HAVE WATER IN THE OIL. AFTER USING IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS THE WATER IN THE RADIATOR IS DOWN A BIT. THE OIL IS A GRAYISH COLOR. CAN ANY ONE PLEASE GIVE ME A LIST OF THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSES? COULD THE SEAL BETWEEN THE SLEEVES AND THE BLOCK BE LEAKING,MAYBE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.THE TRACTOR STILL RUNS FINE.

Steve,
Dell is right. I just got through with a complete overhaul because of the same problem. I was convinced that the block had a crack but it turned out that the head was warped and the head gasket was leaking --- in a big way. When I removed the head there was about a cup of water on top of the piston. I assume this was getting past the rings as it sat and into the oil sump. Surprising thing was how well it ran despite this problem. I think it was leaking only when it was first stopped and allowed to cool down.

Steve..... ...Most likely problem is a "blown head gasket". Block sleeves are "dry".

Check for a "warped" head. If warped, have a machine shop "skim" or mill the head true.

Good Luck..... .Dell
