I notice that my 8N smokes out of the oil filler cap (new cap). Is that normal? Also, how would I identify if a valve was sticking?

Erick

That was normal for my dad's 2 N when the motor needed overhaul for years. We complained so much about the stink that he finally caved in and we rebuilt it.

Well, it is normal for one with worn cylinder parts.

A dry, and then wet, compression test would help in diagnosing your problems.

My best guess is that you really need to rework your engine.

Could also be stuck rings from just sitting.

You could try taking the plugs out and pouring in some ATF, or MMO, and letting it set for a day or two, and then turning it over without the plugs to clean it out, then getting her started again, this is snake oil, but has on occasion got them loosened back up.

If you have a stuck valve, chances are you will hear it miss. To confirm it, you would need to do a compression check.

Re smoke from the breather cap....is it smoke or water vapor? Does the engine have a thermostat? (check out tip # 35, below)

If it's smoke & increases under load, it's a good chance you have ring blow-by. Again, a compression check would be in order. But, it could be just normal water vapor from the crankcase.
