I recently bought this Ford 8N and it seems that it is charging. When you turn it on, you can see it is charging after a while the needle goes back to the middle (zero). So, does it charge completely and goes to zero? I tried to check if the wires to the meter were ok not grounding or anything but I did not find any wires. Is the wire to the meter between the metal body? Any suggestions is appreciated.

The N tractors did not come from the factory with an altimeter. Ammeters were standard tho.
Yours sound like it is working normally. Ammeter shows net charge into or outa the battery. Near zero is correct after replacing current lost from running the starter motor.

I got an altimeter in my truck. It's just a cheapie and is highly affected by the weather, but it's fun to watch it go from 5400 to just over 7000 then back down to 4200 when I go to Salt Lake (50 miles). I find it interesting to monitor on longer trips, too.

When I drove to the east coast back in '97 it was pretty boring after Denver....it didn't seem to move much!

Hey, you guys, an altimeter, tells you at what altitude you are flying on an airplane. On your truck it would tell how high above sea level you are. That thing on yer truck that moves the hand when you rev the engine is a tachometer that tells the rpm's your engine is turning. The ammeter shows charging or discharging of the alternator. Once the battery is charge fully it will level out at zero.

I know what an altimeter is. When I leave home I'm at 5400 feet above sea level. On my way to SLC I go up to 7000 feet twice then down to 4200 feet.

Sounds like it's working fine. When it starts up, the v/r opens & the generator charges the battery & the ammeter shows the charge. As the battery recharges, the meter moves to the center. With the engine off, turn on the light switch. The meter should move to the left, showing a discharge on the battery.

The OEM meter had a wire that passed through a loop on the back of it. New meters have two wires that attach to it.

Sounds right to me, a charged battery doesn't need charging.

And if you keep on, it wouldn't be doing the battery good.

Actually when I seen the topic, I though you had added wings and was worried about the altimeter.

After reading yer post I figgered you was talking about the ammeter.
