Well i acquired a late model side distributer 8N late last fall. I have noticed that the lifters around #1 cyl.(closest to rad) are getting noisy'r at cold start, even with a fresh oil change, then after 45sec - 1 min. she quiets right down. I took a look see behind the inspection covers and it appears to have adj. lifters. This engine has a rebuild tag on it from 1998. Also it has oil pressure of 40 cold and 35 hot. Compression dry is about 110 on all cyl. but #1 and is a bit lower at 98-100. Any ideas where i should start? Glad these suckers are easy to work on cause i don't know a monkey wrench from a adjustable (grin) but learning! I gots me a IT manual but so far its mostly all greek :) That cold start noisy sure is a pain to the ears so any help would be appreciated.

you need the adjusting gizmos sold on this web site. take a look at the parts and a pic of the two gizmos needed for adjusting the lifters

I recently recieved a couple of adjustable lifters and the adjuster did not have any tension on the screw. So if you get in there and find that the adjuster nut turns freely, that is probably the prob, but then the head has to come off ad the lifters out to get the to tension up when adjusting.

I still give a lot of my bussiness to the local "Ford" dealer. Has been family owned operated since before I was born. If I have question about my 9N they will talk to me over the phone. Only drawback is they are closed Sat. afternoons and Sunday as that is when they are out farming.

Can't you love a dealer like that, in Massachusetts no less!!!

Have you adjusted the valve clearance? Mine tapped even when warm before I did, been 5-6 years since and quiet as a sewing machine in there now.

I had a rusted out intake/exhaust manifold so i adjusted mine when I had that off. I think you can get at them with it still in place though. There is a special wrench needed to hold the tappets, I brought mine from the local Ford/new holland dealer.

Enigine was MUCH quieter after the adjustment.
