I need to buy a battery for the 1952 8N, side mount tractor. It is positive ground. I have the manuals but don't find a part number for a battery. I took the outside dimensions of the battery when I was up in the country, but would feel more confident if I knew a battery/part number. I hesitate to put my self in the hands of the young people in Houston who work behind the parts counter. They Don't relate well to a machine 50 yers old. thank you

I replaced my old 6-volt Interstate Workaholic battery a while back with a new one which I was told is the replacement, serial #USRM-1. It fit fine on my 1948 8N. Incidentally, Over the 37 years I've replaced several batteries on it. Never knew anything about polarizing, except one time when I had the generator rebuilt and read the instructions for the new replacement voltage regulator I'd bought--the ONLY time Ive ever polarized. Good luck. Angelo

I should have said that, That is really the only time you truly need to polarize is when you monkey with the genny,, I was actually saying that the only need to know + or - ground was for the genny,, nobody at the sales dept would care,,, he would have gotten funny looks or a "GOOD" salesman would have to special order a different battery for him hahahahaha..

I also assummed his next question would have been that it aint chargin?

Pat;

I'm glad you mentioned Polerization to him. It got me to thinking about how he signed when he posted this thred. His sign in was Newbie, and that is why I posted the pic.

Like you say there is no real reason for polerizing, unless you mess with the genny, But..... you can polerize the system 20 times and day if you want too, and still not mess with the genny. I look at it this way, when I first got my "N", no one ever told me to polarize the system, and it took me almost a month to finally get enough nerve to ask what was wrong with my charging system.

Better safe than sorry, and he is better off now than, not knowing!!!

The part number for the battery you need is 8N-10655 however you'll probably just get some dumb looks. 1948/52 with the red FORD TRACTOR logo is available for some $140.00.

GB in MT, Thanks a bunch for that photo I have been reading the archives for "polarizing" most of the morning , but that answers my questions.
Thanks all on the battery question.

Pretty much anybody that sells batterys will have a 6 volt group 1. The only difference is the CCA. I bought a cheap one and had starting issues for a year and pitched it for a new one with about 100 more CCA. No problems since. I can't tell you what my CCA is unless I went to the barn.

And.... If you don't happen to know how to polarize the system, follow the instuctions on this V/R. Your V/R won't look like this, but polarization will be the same. Just make sure to use the same posts. "Battery/Armiture

Great pix, at one time Echlin was as good as it gits, not any more tho. better than most but not made in the USA. One of the biggest fights i got into with NAPA was over a echlin part. I returned a ignition part that was plain as day a AC delco part. Parts man was quite a fight'z guy pert near want'ed to take it out to the street, said i wuz try'n to pull a fast one. I said lets go pull a few parts first then I will see about whopping yer arse. We found AC delco and Ford parts in his collection of BOXED Echlin parts. he lost a rite good account, I was a stocking dealer at that time and sent in my collection for credit.
I highly recommend that pix b saved in one's tractor tips file.

Since you say it is positive ground, I assume it is a 6 volt battery. They can still be found. Try tractor places.

there really is no part number persay, I think it is a group 1,, but any 6 volt battery is the correct one, they are basically all the same size,, it doesnt natter positive or negative ground,, to purchase a battery, only have to poplarize it so the genny knows what to do,
