Been reading lots of archive posts on steering box(s). I’m sure convinced I want to lube it before something fails in there.

I know I have the inaccessible pipe plug on the left side of my stearing box. I’d rather not take half the tractor apart etc to remove it, drill the dash support etc.

I’m hoping that I can use the “secret fill-em up hole” behind the top right side bolt but I’m not sure what I’m seeing when I remove that bolt and if I have the “later model”

When the bolt is out there is about a 1/4 inch gap and then there is a solid bit of steel. If I use a bent piece of wire I can go down in the 1/4 inch gap a good 4-5 inches but I have no idea where I am poking around. I can also go up a ways as well.

Is this where the grease ends up going? Or does this bolt hole not really communicate with the inside of the steering box.

I’d hate to make the grease/zerk combo and pump grease all over something totally unrelated.

Thanks as alwasy

Happy user of JDeere Cornhead Grease, in my '50 8N

Squirt it in, it will eventually come out the top of the steering wheel column.  You may need to wipe up excess for a while when you have hot days, but it will stop coming out after a while.

I don"t think the “secret fill-em up hole” is on the right side but would not rule it out, if it will take grease then gofer it you will not hurt a thang.

I never gave that much thought actually, you're probably right.

There is the push-it reset button for the proofmeter. And yes, looks like a ground connection, never thought about it.

The second pic showing the zerk has the proofmeter cable disconnected, of course in real life it is connected, it is convenient to disconnect the cable when adding grease, cuz it is a tight fit there, but it works out fine. I'm scheduling adding more grease about every 50 hours, which for me is a couple seasons.
