hello all new to sight,i have a 8N tractor had it for about a year now,iam finaly taking intrest in it,it needs a little work, reading through some posts ive answered alot of my questions except one.
this tractor has a generator on it,ive had to charge the battery a few times do to inactivity, and the charger always shows the battery voltage to be around 12volts! could this tractor run on a 12volt battery even though it has a 6volt system!or does a 6volt battery show that many volts,i use a smart charger that auto reads the voltage.....well ill have more question later and ill get ser# and all too thanks for any help..... ....

A 6 volt battery will have 3 holes in the top to put water in. A 12 volt will have 6 holes. You cannot run a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt system. (not for long anyway)

While it is possible that someone went to the trouble to put a 12v genny on there, it is very likely they were a lazy sob, and stuck a 12v battery in there for fast cranks and then sold it to some unsuspecting person (you).

These tractors were 6v positive ground from the factory. start it up and see if you have power on the armature to ground.. use a test lamp.. if so, test it with an analog meter.. might show high like 9-10v due to no load. .. if it is putting out, you may just need a 6v battery.

Some people use wimpy 4ga 12v battery cables on their N and then wonder why it cranks hard.. then convert to 12v instead of putting the correct 1/0 cables on it in the first palce..

Ground is ground... ground is not a reference to ANY specific polarity. Ground is ALWAYS the same polarity as the chassie on these tractor applications. Thus.. if your battery is installed with the positive post tied tot he chassie, you have a positive ground.. ( negative is your 'hot' post when it comes to positive ground..e tc.. )

ok thanks, well after more checking, from the serial # its a 1952 model,i know it has a front mount distributor. Also it looks like its been converted to 12v,i looked at the VR and its a standard vr-20 12v pos or neg model.I also tested it with a test lamp from Armature to ground and nothing, ill have to pick up a anolog meter too just to be sure.
It starts up fine now though but i guess its running off the battery.now i guess i have a decesion to make on how i want to go,new 12v conversion or rewire the genny and new VR....
What would oyu guys do!thanks again soundguy for your help..... ..

1952 and front mount distrib don't jive.

1952 models had side mount distribs.

Hmm.. a vr-20.. that's a vr that used on some chevy products .. like a early 60's corvair..etc usually a 30amp job.

What do you have .. an old style alternator and this external VR.. or do you have a generator.

if you don't know the difference.. post a pic.

Forget the analog meter for now.. the test lamp would have showed you if you were charging or not.

Also.. let us know how that system is grounded. So far we know it is 12v via batter power.. etc.

Sounds like a boogery mess in the electrical dept.

Post back more info.
