Weather is turning - thoughts of winter storage

Really noticing a change in the weather here in N CA - mornings are downright chilly and the nights are drawing in. Apple Hill season is starting up and the 'grockles' are starting to show up.

Anyway, unfortunately I think my poor 8N is going to be outside this winter as I have no storage shed for her - the IH is going in the barn. I am going to get a good tarp and cover the tractor up but want to have it ready to go should we have some snow and I need to scrape the driveway.

Dont laugh, but would it make any difference to put a couple of horse blankets under the tarp? Would this actually make things worse if they freeze and turn to rock? Any thoughts about storing for winter but with the intent of using it should it be necessary.

Lee

Wrap my Ford for winter in one of those heavy duty silver gray tarps, the ones that are made for pipe frame canopies. Bring the battery inside and put the charger on it about once a month, once really cold weather gets here.

Thought I'd have a shed built for it by this coming winter, looks iffy at this point.

Anyone ought to be able to come up with enough scrap to build a $50 shed for an N tractor, no excuses!!

Never again will my tractor sit out in the rain, or snow, but we don't seem to have that anymore here.

Remove the battery & keep it indoors. Fill up the gas tank w/ fresh gas & Sta-Bil. (Some folks let the carb run dry; I don't, because I do not want a rusty bowl or dried out gaskets.) Remove the plugs, put a tablespoon of oil in the cylinders. Block the clutch. Put it on blocks or jack stands to keep the tires off of the ground. Change the oil & lube it. Make sure the hydraulic fluid doesn't have water in it. Check the anti-freeze. I don't think putting a tarp over it gets you much. A car cover, which supposedly does not retain moisture, would be a better idea.

Nice to hear outside storage is not blasphemy for these beasts cuz if I got one up at the cabin she'd probably have to live under the stars too. Sorry for my ignorance -- what does block the clutch mean?

My '48N stays outside under a heavy-duty plastic tarp which seems to help snow slide off it. I keep the gas tank full, a wrap around battery heater and a trickle charger on the battery. Had no problems starting, even at 5 below zero!

Mine used to sit outside all year till i built the new barn. I just sprayed the distributer and plug wires with spray silicone once a month, never used a tarp. It allways started when ever i needed it, even when covered with snow.

I`ve got three 8N`s, one gets to stay inside for the winter and the other two get a new tarp every winter as their cover. The tarp makes it easier to get the nights snow off of the tractor if I need to use it to clear the driveway.

Lee---I store my worker tractor outside and cover the hood/engine area with a tarp just to keep moisture off of the electrical system.

I do have 2x12 boards that I run the tractor up on to keep the tires away from as much moisture as I can. The rear tires were weather checked when I got the tractor and have held up for 3 years without having to get them replaced.

Keep the gas tank full so you don't get any condensate it the tank/fuel and you should be ok.
Some of the guys run a fuel additive in the tank as well. I have used Sta-bil.

I agree. Using sta-bil has helped all of my stored equipment to run better. I put it in tractors, motorcycles, chainsaws, riding mowers, etc...

Lee,

I store my 8N under a tarp (as do several others on the board, I believe) and have had no problems. Ultimately, if you don"t have a pristine tractor, I"m not even sure that a tarp is even needed. It just gives me a little piece of mind. But plenty of hard working tractors stay outside year round.
