I was cleaning / scrubbing my project the other night, cleaning a little and such. I laid on my back and was cleaning under the rear housing; scraping off some hard as a rock dirt/grease that's been there ..... forever. My little scraper hit a hard spot and I was like.... "hm, wonder what that is". I ran the scraper over it again with a tad more force and off dropped a slab of JB WELD from the hydraulic pump base.
drip .... drip.... drip.... you get the picture

After scrambling for an oil pan to set under there to catch the drips I found the "slab" that had come off. It had been covering/sealing a crack in the hydraulic pump base. That slab of JB Weld had paint on one side. I called up Granpa and asked him about it. It took a little jogging of the memory and he recalled that it had been done before the tractor was painted last (30+ years ago). I'm 34 and it hasn't been painted in my lifetime. He seemed to recall an incident with a tree stump or a small boulder.... he didn't remember which, said he'd run over a number of things at one time or another while clearing land on his old place.

The hydraulics always worked fine and he never had a problem with it. I just now have a crack in the pump base that wasn't visible to me before.

Now I have to figure out if we give JB Weld another go around and see if it'll last another 30yrs..... or if I should just change out the pump.

As long as the crack isn't in a pressurized portion.. IE.. it's just a crack to the sump.. then clean it and rejbweld it.

Guess you could get fancy and braze it.. or silver solder it too..

There's a long bead of JB on the left side of the engine block on my 8N. I've had the tractor for about 16 years, and my dad had it for about 25+ years prior to that. He didn't put the JB there, so no telling how long it has been holding that motor together. I can assure you that tractor has worked hard during the past 35 or so years.

If jbweld has held it for the last 30+ years, I'd be cleaning it up real good and jbweld it again.
30+ years from now you'll have a story to tell your grandson when he scrapes the dirt off the tractor to repaint it...
