Help..... ..
I have only a few things left to do before I get my tractor's engine back on my 1950 8N tractor....One is to put the new ring gear on the flywheel . I have removed the old ring gear with no problem and cleaned the flywheel recess . I read in the IT manual to heat the ring gear up to 360 deg and then just put it on the flywheel and then quench it with water to get a good fit on the recess . I have heated the ring gear up to 375 deg for 20 minutes or so ,and then tried to put the ring gear on but no way.... I then tried to gently hammer it on , using a block of wood , after reheating it again still no go . I made sure that there are no burrs on the edge of the flywheel and smoothed it out with a file and then a stone ,if I did find any burrs , tried again and still no go . It doesn't seem like it is too far off but no ciiiii iigar yet .
I compared it to the old ring gear and it appears as if it the right size but it just won't go on !!!!
Am I doing something wrong ??? Is there some sort of hidden trade secret here ??? It is one of those things that looks like the dreaded 5 minute job..... ....
Thanks in advance
Alan

I had the same problem... messed with it till I was frustrated. I took the flywheel to the ford dealer and $9.00 and 20 minutes later I had an installed ring gear!

I worked in the auto business for 46 years.Occasionally we would run across this problem. When all else fails pack the flywheel in dry ice for a few hours or overnight.Use two people and while one person heats the ring gear up the second person brings the flywheel at the last minute.I think this procedure will get the job done for you.

Just went through the same thing. Put flywheel in freezer for two days and baked the ring gear. Close but no cigar. Checked the archives and I think it was John.COLO that mentioned heating it with a torch. Did so for a few minutes and it dropped right on. 350 or 400 just isn't quite enough.

Yup ! Same here, I put the old flywheel in the freezer and "Baked" the new ring gear in the wife's oven, I even tried pounding it on in the kitchen on the kitchen table, figured that way, straight out of the oven and right on the flywheel ! Did'nt work!, although the wife was really happy with me !I got the old "Does this kitchen look like your work shop??" "So what's your point?" wrong thing to say)-:

later,dave

Go very gently on that "more is better" when it comes to heating steel. You can find yourself drawing the temper from the ring gear and having one that wears out in record time as a result.

Instead of putting the flywheel in the freezer for two days (quantity of time doesn't make it colder), I'd put it in for a couple of hours, but with the freezer cranked all the way down to maximum cold.

Thankyou. Forgot to mention the go easy. I was even skeptical about using a torch, but it appeared the only way.

As far as the freezer - you bring up an interesting point - the flywheel is a substantial thermal mass, and without calculations, I would doubt that in a couple of hours would do much good in a freezer. Once frozen, however, it will not get colder.

Kinda like the debate - does a tractor feel wind chill? Well, only to the point that it determines how fast it reaches ambient temperature. Same with the flywheel, it takes a fair amount of time to reach a homogenous temperature equal to that of the freezer.

IMHO

I think there is also a factor involved with the dimensional planes of the piece. The ring gear will tend to stretch and shrink more proportionally than will the flywheel over its face dimensions. Something to do with mass and thermal coeffeicients and heat transfer...
