When we moved to the Middle West six years ago, I was given an old 3pt disc by a man at our church, and have used it a good bit since. However, it was not in the best of condition when I got it, and several discs have broken their welds and have been flopping around to the point where they bent the axle they run on.
As all of the bearings in the disc were shot years ago and fixing the old one looked like a hopeless job, I thought I'd look at a new disc, but after seeing the $800+ price tag, and not being willing to wait to find a good used one, I thought I'd take a crack at fixing the old one anyway.
The hardest part to fixing it ended up being removing the large square nut at the end of the bent axle, and the recent YT posts on unsticking broken bolts came in real handy towards that end.
I applied Liquid Wrench and PB Blaster liberally, and went through two good heat cycles with a MAPP gas flame wrench. None of that worked, however, until I used a cold chisel and large ball peen to whack on the lugs of the nut which loosened it right up.
From there, it was just a matter of removing the broken discs, straightening the axle with the patented "Flabtrolic Press" (I am the Flabtrolic press, in case you're wondering), fabricating a new set of spacers so the discs would run straighter, welding the discs back to the carrier, and bolting it all back up.
Took about two hours total to do, and I should be able to disc the hay field tomorrow...
Now if I could only convince the wife that I can spend that $800 on something else since I didn't have to buy a new disc (grin).
