Please no flames here but just in case I'll put on the suit.
Is there a reason that the plug wires must run through the steel tube?
Just wondering as I'm getting ready to get a new set of plug wires.
It sure would seem a lot easier if you didn't have to run them through the steel tube and fix up a nice looking wire loom instead.
I can think of several reasons not to but only the one reason running it through the tube would be to keep it stock and original which I can always go back to if I desire to.

BTW it's a 1948 front mount distributor with a 12 volt system

I recon if you pay your own bills you can do what you want to ( at least thats what I tell my kids when they want some money to fix something up , he he )

I never liked having the plug wires touch anything metal or each other . Not that its really a big deal with todays silicon wire coatings , just how I learned it growing up .

So unless its ALL original or a rare model , I say go for it .

Thanks for the info. I did my 40 ford flattie years ago without the tube too and custom built the loom but I needed to know for sure.
Next question, I know the firing order but where is number one on the distributor cap? My older I&T book it doesn't show it.....

Thanks again in advance

It just protects the wires. Not a gotta do. I have a couple of 8Ns without the tube on them anymore because it wasn't there when I got them. I kind of like to use the tube just to keep things together and tidy but it's your tractor and your call. There are a lot of the tubes missing or routed around out there.

Ford dropped the tube when they went to side mounted distributor on later 8Ns
