Brush hog for 8N

I am going to look at a brush hog for my 8N on Sunday - the guy claims it was on an 8N before and has been little used even though it is about 15 years old.

His initial asking price is $500. I hope to bargain him down as he claims he has not used it for a while and it is just in the way.

I have a couple of questions.

1. Are there different sizes/weight model brush hogs? If so, what is the correct size for my 8N and what would be too big?

2. What should I look for on a used brush hog which might be a problem?

3. Is the asking price about right for a used piece of equipment like this (obviously I will have to check condition etc)?
Thanks,

Lee

I bought a 5 ft. used Woods from a neighbor a couple of years ago for $200. It is well used but gearbox, bearings, seals, etc. are all in good shape, so I feel I got a deal. My property is some hilly, and the 5 foot heavy duty hogs are about all my 8N"s can handle without lifting the front end. If your property is flat, I suppose you"d be OK with a 6 footer, but I wouldn"t consider one for any hill work at all. I would not pay $500 for a used hog, but prices depend on geographic area, etc. Your money/your choice. Good luck!

There are different size gearboxes, even on 5-foot mowers. The smallest is a 40 hp and is adequate for an 8N.

I'm on my second King Kutter; the first lasted nearly 30 years, and was still working, but pretty beat up when I sold it for less than $100 recently. New one cost me around $600 a couple of years ago at TSC. I can't say anything bad about KK's.

Agree with others, $500 is way too much for a 15 year old one, in my opinion. I'd pay more and get a new one if your're willing to put $500 into it.

A 5' bush is ideal for the N tractors. Some will say 6', no doubt, but you will find a 5' is the right wwidth for your tractor, any wider would be wwider than your rear wheel width. Just buy the best you can for as little as you can. Good luck!!

Thanks for all your good advice - I will bear this in mind when I go have a look on Sunday - I have seen those King Kutters on e bay for about $700 - however, another post I saw didnt have a particularly positive comment about them.

You can get a new 5 ft King Kutter for $750.00. They are a little light but can handle anything an 8N can dish out. I have been using one for 3 years and have ran over lots of big rocks and brush with no problems.

1. Most people preffer nothing bigger than a 5 foot for an 8n. I have used a 6 foot broush hog but I had to back up the hills when I had it lifted to keep the front end of the tractor down. The 6 foot was a little to much mower for the tractor. Not saying it can't be done, I did it and alot of others do...But my opinion is that a 5 foot would run a little better for you. Especially on the hills

2. Gear box problems. If you can turn it over by hand, lisen for a slight clunking noise. You should also feel a bad gear when turning it. It should turn smooth and no clunking or play. Also check the blades, be sure they are not bent or chpped. They are usually jointed (two pieces on each side) make sure they swing freely.

3. The asking price is just about what you get a brush hog in good condition around here. I have seen them as low as $200 for one that is beat and needs a little tin. The average in this part of NY is between $300 and $500 for a good used one.

A 5' mower will go through about anything an 8N can push down with the bumper. You can use a 6' mower if you don't go through thick stuff, or mow frequently.

Check the oil seals for leaks on both the shaft the blades are attached to on the bottom, and where the PTO input shaft goes into the gearbox. Also, check good for rust through.

I personally think $500 is way to high for a 15 year old mower, even if it was a Brush Hog brand that was used once then put into dry storage for 15 years. I would not pay more than about $250 for a good quality lightly used mower that old.

Just my $.02 worth,
Dan

I agree with Dan, $500 is pretty high for any 15 year old hog. I have a Hardee but dealer about a mile away sells Woods for $620 new and used ones here go for less than $500. I do not recommend a six footer, or any thing that weighs over about 650 lbs.
