So, a nice evening here in N CA - fired up the 8N (see other post for other issues) - and took a ride around the property...whilst doing so I realized that there is an added benefit of riding an old tractor....you really cant go that fast....so, gives you time to look at things, think about stuff and relax a bit....mind you, I need a cup holder or something on the tractor on these evenings for my beer!!!

I was wondering though....when just cruising around, what gear do you usually use? I actually found that 4th gear was a bit 'fast' for me!!!! Coming down the hill back to the house I felt the thing was running away with me...and the brakes are pretty feeble on this thing!

3rd seems to be about right as in 2nd it seems to be racing to even be going along at a slow walk.

I stick w/ 3rd across most of the pastures or meadows, but I like to turn'er loose in 4th coming up the drive(about 1/4 mile). Sometimes I'll hit the brakes just to hear the gov. kick in.

beware, a worn out 8n with overdrive can really scare you, or worse

Here on my property in NH, it"s all wooded with lots of hills. On my tractor roads, I"m either in 1st or 2nd gear only. But I keep my set of double ring chains on year round.
In the winter when I"m plowing snow, once in a while I use 3rd gear to get a good run at the snow going up my one and only small incline.
Wouldn"t ever put it in 4th unless I had some teeth I was willing to part with....lol

Saturday afternoon I fired up my 8N, and just leaned up against the rear wheel with a beer in hand and listened to her run. I only use 4th on the road. 3rd on our field roads - but in places that's too fast, and 2nd if I'm going over rough pasture land.

This week the end of summer has left me feeling somewhat melancholy. Autumn is such a beautiful time of year, full of thanksgiving and a slowing down - both mentally and physically (Sorel boots will do that to you!). But this year I feel like there is not enough time to properly enjoy the season, added with a sense that it is going to be a long winter this year. We've already had a killing frost, and the first dusting of snow fell in Tofte, MN last week.

In short, I wish I had more time to enjoy the sound of my 8N and the taste of a good beer while watching maple leaves fall.

Colin, MN

I like 3rd in my pasture if I'm going somewhere on purpose.. or 2nd if I'm crusing the fence line..

I usually use second gear when I take my N's out for a drive around the place. I use second so I can raise the RPMs up and really warm the engine and oil up since I do not run them a lot. This way I can still go slow and enjoy the drive, but really heat up the tractor to evaporate condensation with a 30-45 minute drive.

Dang!!! Still cant see your pic...please try again.

For some people it is like a sprint to the finish line....and the line is the last one on your headstone.

I just thought that up so make sure you quote me!

They just ain't no reason to go rushing thru life on an N tractor.

1st is plenty when you are enjoying life.

Ifn you want to go fast thru the woods git you a dirt bike.

That N tractor has the ability to feed you and your family, no need to rush that.

Folks have really lost the world, and the reason to live it by going too fast.

The news every day is terrible, and the weather forcast just isn't that good no more, even when they git it right.

God Bless us all!!

I agree with 4th being too fast. I used to rent a Pecan orchard about 7 miles away and 8N and 4830 Ford did all the work and drove too/from the orcard. That was the only time I used 4th..everything else is 3rd to tool around.

I always considered 4th as a road gear, even 3rd on my small spot gets hairy til I can get some more of the stumps cleared.
