I have a 8N with a front mount distributor that is giving me a lot of problems overheating and burning the coil. Is there an electronic ignition kit that you can mount on this tractor? Thanks and have a good day!!

Fixing the coil problem is easy, but we need to know a few things first. There are about 6 ways to convert an N to 12v & an infinite number of ways to do it wrong. It sounds to me like the attempted 'fixes' w/ all the resistors & new switches are just making it worse. And, until you figure out if you have a 6v or 12v coil, you are just going to be wasting time.

The second article by Chris Britton (aka souNdguy) has all the info you need about resistors.

And, to reiterate, an EI is not going to fix this problem.

Thank you so much for this information. I wish I had it about 3 coils ago. Again thanks!!

I converted my 1949 to 12 volt Electronic Ignition in 2003, and I have "zero" problems with it since I removed the troublesome 6 volts system. The 8N will start in zero weather, and runs better, saves on fuel, and most of all, it has more power and spark.

Ricky, call Andy (if he still there) at Genesee Products in Owasso, Ok. The telephone number is.. 918-274-8000.

You get all the parts needed to make the change-over. Including wiring and such.

Take the old tractor, and turn it into a modern days version. You will be so glad you did..

Ditto what bruce said.. solve the ignition current issue before dropping in an EI to roast it up as well.

What is the correct resistor to use and the correct coil for 12V? Thanks for responding.

Your goal is no more than 3-4 amps of ignition current for a happy coil and points.

I'd use the oem ballast resistor, and a 2 to 2.5 ohm resistor in series with it and the oem coil.

Again thank you for your response. Unfortunately I am illiterate when it comes to working on tractors. I am helping my Dad getting this tractor running correctly. I should be able to measure the current but I don't know what oem ballast resistor is and what an oem coil. What does oem stand for. Thank you for your patience and help!!

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACURER

IE.. if you buy a part from a gm dealer as a replacement for your GM car you are getting an OEM replacement part similar to what came on it when it was manufactured, vs what you might find in the aftermarket.

At this point you probably need a set of manuals for that tractor if you don't know what it did or did not come with.. etc.. especially if you plan on fixing it up..

Sure, you can get an EI for your frontmount 8N. Then, you will have an 8N frontmount w/ an EI that still burns coils up. An EI does not replace a coil, it replaces points. If it is burning coils up, you have a problem that can easily be fixed w/o an EI.

Is it 6v or 12v? My bet is 12v & you have the wrong resistors in the circuit, if you have any at all.

What do you mean when you say 'overheating'? Is the radiator boiling over?

It is 12V. We had one resistor in line with the coil and the coiled spring from the coil would burn up. We added an additional resistor which helped the coil but there was not enough fire to start the tractor. We added a switch that would put one resistor in the circuit to start the tractor and then flip the switch one the tractor was going. I really appreciate you responding to my problem.
