Hey guys need some help regarding my '47 2N

My tractor was working fine & I went away for a few days & returned to find that my 2N (12VDC) would read a heavy "discharge" on the ammeter once started! At idle it reads about -20 Amps & with more throttle it pegs the needle (over - 30 Amps).

There are no "visible" shorts but something is causing it to discharge. Is it likely that there is an internal problem with the alternator??

Thanks,

Gary

Alternator probably went south on you but to be sure just take it in to an auto parts store and have it checked. Most will do it for free and the machine they have will tell you the whole story. If you find that its still good then you probably have a short some place. Mice love to cause that type of problems all the time but I would start with the alternator because its easy and cheap to test. But if it isn't the alternator do find the problem before hooking the alternator back up or you could fry it fast

Check those battery connections and polarities.

Also.. you mention alternator.. is that what it really has? Or could it have a 12v generator?

Any chance idle hands have messed with the ammeter wireing / battery instalation while you were gone?
