TSC ORC purchased about 7 years ago- used maybe 100 hours on a bush hog since then. Always been cleaned and well greased. Yesterday tractor/mower developed major "something's out of balance" vibration. I don't find any contributor other than ORC seems a bit sloppy when you wiggle the ouput shaft.(PTO shaft is tight and has no perceptible slop).
Don't see any thing other than ORC is shot!
Do these things have short life?
Are they economically rebuildable?
Is there a really better unit out there other than the one TSC peddles?
Any suggestions appreciated...

Ditto what dean said.

if you got 7ys on it.. it was at least medium quality and had some maintenance.

My TSC unit is now going on 7ys and is still tight.. but I grease it daily.. etc. I suspect it will be going withing the next few years as it will eventually wear and get some slop even with good greasing.

Mine did the very same thing 2 years ago. Checked the joints in the PTO shaft and there was a small amount of play not to much. Pumped them full of grease and they run as smooth as new.

Pete:

The useful life of an ORC depends upon the quality of the unit and the frequency of lubrication.

I have been through cheap ORCs within a year or two but a good one may last 10 years or more with adequate lubrication.

The one that I have on my 51 8N now has been on it since 1987.

ORCs have a simple dog clutch inside. I try to grease mine after about 2 or 3 hours of use.
