Bought a 2,8 or 9N today. All I can find is Ford on the hood. Flathead, MS carb, cast iron oil pan? It has what I think is the PTO lever on the left side. A small 4" lever under the seat on the right. Idon't know anything about this tractor except the owner said he drove it to a car wash and had to pull it back home. This was about a year ago. We tried pulling it off but not even a pop or sputter. There is a tag on the battery box that is 50% eaten away. Any idea what I have? David.

If the battery is dead it won't fire.. and likely the points are coroded after he washed it then let it setup fro a year.

Clean the points, charge the battery, and change out the gas..

Look for serial # on left side of engine block - just below the head. Then look to the left of this page under Research & Info you will find Serial Numbers. This will give you the engine year but remember that in 50+ years you could have parts of many different years put together.

So far, it is an 8N - the little lever on the right side is the draft/position control selector. Give us some more to go on & you can pin it down - engine serial number is on the rear right side of the block, just under the head. Sometimes there's a clear date on the bottom of the hydraulic pump, and all the castings generally have date codes as well. If the distributor and square coil are on the very front of the block, it is a '48 to mid '50, if on the side with a round coil, it is a late '50 to '52. All 8N's are 4 speed with both brake pedals on the right side. The good folks here can help you get'er going once you pass on the above info.

Sounds like an 8N (the lever under the seat). Maybe the points got wet while washing. HTH

4 " lever under the seat is the position/ draft control lever. Sounds like a 8N. 4 speed tranny? Have a pic? Tune up might just get it running.

If it has a 4 speed tranny its an 8N if a 3 speed could be either a 2N or 9N. But from what you say sounds like an 8N.

I've got a 8N for sure. Thanks to all. I cleaned the distributor, points and every thing else with contact cleaner. Still no spark at plugs. I got my trusty 260 Simpson meter and had no voltage to the coil. Finally traced it to a bad key switch. Jumped that out and with a little ether it started. Still has a small skip so I'll get new plugs and solid wires next. I noticed it's got automotive plug wires on it now. I let it run about thirty minutes and then rode it around the East forty. Oil pressure warm is 60 psi at open throttle and 25 psi at slow idle. David.
