Copper plug lead question

I have two spark plug leads with gouges in them from bad routing on my behalf which caused the fan belt to grind into them - one is close to cutting into the copper core and the other has a medium gouge - off down to the local parts store which is the old school type and has stuff for trucks and older guys who know their stuff.

First I was told that these gouges will indeed affect the spark...yes/no?

then when I told him that I needed copper core leads was told that these actually are illegal now? And, finally that it makes no difference if the internal part of the plug lead is copper or the newer material.

So - went home without buying new plug leads to try and get to the bottom of this. Bummer is that the plug leads are brand new from tractor supply site. This is for my 49 8N with 6volt system front distr.

Clarification would be extremely helpful.

Lee

Soundguy is correct and your parts guys are F. Is. (second word - Idiots)

Tell 'em you don't appreciate them making up stuff they don't know anything about. Plainly. In front of their customers.

1, the gouges can cause them to degrade and leak faster.

2, they ARE NOT illegal. tractor supply sells them every day.

3, Electrically there is a WORLD of difference in a resistor wire and a copper wire. I'd like to see your counter guy's engineering degree.

A resistor wire will lessen emi/rfi interference and reduce spark energy.

Put some rtv ont he wires and then let it cure, and then put a few winds of black electrical tape on them and call it done...

Oh.. and don't patronize that store. in fact.. you may want to let the manager know why you no longer spend your $$ there because he has idiots for counter people. The guy must have never worked/seen an old points ignition system in a tractor.. Chances are that if he is giving you bad advice and running you off.. he's also running other customers off and loosing that store money...

A good electrical parts dealer will have rolls of copper plug wire with all the ends to make custom wires for anything, and cheaper that way too.

Lee, they are right that the gouges will affect performance because with humidity in the air it allows for leakage and that will weaken the spark. The other thing is DONT USE non copper wire. There is too much resistance and the coil will eventually break down and fail. Always use solid copper.

Very Sound Advice, but you know too much. Just kidding!
