So I went out today to start my homemade lawn tractor. It has a Briggs I/C 13 HP Vertical shaft engine. About 15 seconds after starting it made a REALLY loud squealing noise. I shut it down right away. It would not turn over again, checked oil, NO OIL!!! So I put in a quart of 30 wt, took the shroud off and turned the flywheel by hand. At first it was really hard to turn but after a few turns it got back to normal. So I tried to start it. It did OK, ran as normal, idled good and ran up to 3000 RPM.

Question is did I kill it? It seems to be back to normal but I am looking for opinions here because I use it in the winter to clear snow and would rather replace engine in the warm before she dies at 20 below.

Opinions welcome.

Thanks,

Joe

Why was it out of oil? Was it drained & not refilled or is it using so much that it run low? I would at least check the rod bearing.

I put a new conn rod in my SIL's engine last year. New rod, gasket set and rings were under $80. This was in a 12 HP BS. A young fella I know taught me a trick. Use muriatic acid to take any aluminum welded on the crankshaft. It may take a couple of hours, but don't leave it too long or it will rust to much. I sprayed the rest of the crank with WD-40 before I soaked it with a rag on the journal.

Well, I guess I have a winter project. Checked it out and I can get a 23 horse v twin for a little over $500 so I am gonna put the big gun in and rebuild the 13 horse over the winter inside where it is warm. Dont want to chance the rod going through the block because thats where my feet are.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Joe

Yep, got the engine out, it is hurt. No recoil starter but she is real tight even with the plug out. I will rebuild this winter. 13 horse was underpowered homemade tractor all hydraulic worth the $500 for a big engine. Already measured, will fit with some mods. Probably better off with the big engine, gotta get a bigger gas tank :)

13 hp, obviously it is electric start..On older models small and up to at least 8-10 hp the recoil clutch will squeal. Sometimes it can be popped apart and cleaned up and it will work ok. No oil, just a squirt or two of WD-40.

I'd run it and see what happens. You can usually buy new Briggs engines cheaper than you can screw around with overhauling one that's kaput.

We own a JD 110 that goes back to 1981. It was 11 hp originally, and several years ago finally got so tired it wouldn't propel the tractor and run the deck at the same time.

I asked the parts man at our local JD dealer about a price of a short block. He replied, "You don't want to know what JD wants for one. I can sell you a brand new 12 hp that will bold right in for $419". He was right. The new engine was complete with starter, etc. All I had to do was bolt it on, put the pulley on the bottom, hook up the ignition wire, fuel line, and throttle and choke cables and fire it up. And a new 12 hp in place of a tired 11 hp really woke that little 110 up!

BTDT, in the mean time I would save this link, I did and it came in rite handy. I brought the engine cheaper than I could buy the parts, delivered to my door.

I spec the same as Jack- does, how lucky do you fell.

My old 6HP tiller engine did that a few times so I run'er till she quit. Amazingly as it sounds the engine looked good as new, But the cam snapped. Got me a new'n from This link.

Chances are it damaged the rod bearing. It may run fine for a long time and it may throw the rod through the side of the block the next time you start it. Safest thing is to pull it apart and have a look - I would replace the rod and have a good look at the throw on the crankshaft. The piston/rings may be scored too, but that isn't as critical about blowing and ruining the block.
