I tried to take the air cleaner body apart to clean but seemed to be sealed. My shop manual says soak it in a sutable salvent. Can these be taken apart and given a good cleaning or what is the best way to clean.

Thanks in advance.

RD

There are three metal tabs that hold the bottom oil cup to the main housing. It's probably has some rust and old dirt/oil crude that keeps it from working loose. You have to pry it off. BTW. Buy some sheet gasket material and cut you one that fits between the cut and housing. This will climate any residue in the further that prevents it coming off.

Put it in a 5 gallon bucket and fill it ith lacquer thinner or mineral spirits or even carb cleaner and let it sit over night. Pull it out and drain all the stuff out of it and let the solvent settle out the crap and corruption that comes out. Decant that mixture and pour off the dirt. Repeat the process until it doesn't show dirt anymore. I did this on my TO-30 air cleaner and it cleaned it out very well without nay disassembly.

On mine you take the bottom cup off, then you can take the guts out, I would recommend cleaning the bottom so that you can tell how it comes apart, I wash mine in gas, but any similar solvent should work.

There are some indentations that hold the bottom part in, it can be aggravating to get out.

That is also if my memory is serving me correctly.

Since I've sat an thought about it...

The tube from the bottom, up the center of the air cleaner does not come out, there should be a piece around that of sheet metal with holes in it, you should be able to get that out, then there is stuff like a Brillo pad, that is around that, that that needs to be pulled out and washed.

I think, I also think, I am having a CRS attack tonight.

That is the part that I could not get loose. It appears to be spot welded . Did you break the weld to get it apart and if so how did you keep it together afterwards?

Thanks,

RD

I don't think mine was spot welded, I think there were these pressed in indentions that hold it, that you have to take a small screwdriver, or 3, and hold back to take it out.
