I went to see a brush hog for sale this afternoon. It is in good solid shape and when I looked around underneath the blades turned easily with no clunking or noise in the gear box device on the top - blades pivoted easily as well and were not bent or dinged. The only thing I could see was that there was obvious signs of an oil leak from the gear box on the top - looked like it was coming from the front where the pto shaft enters - I guess this is just a seal? The guy wants $300 for it which I think is fair as it is in otherwise good shape. Any comments on the oil leak?

During conversation he said it was indeed on an 8N and that the tractor was nearby - so we went to go have a look at it. (I will post some pictures on the site here - not sure how to post a picture here in this part of the forum) - it is in good solid shape with no dings - there was some oil leakage showing near the govener. He said that one day the fan belt broke and said it had been sitting there ever since - he said he was told that to replace the fan belt you have to take the whole front end off the tractor....is this right? I cant believe that is true. Anyway, he wants to sell it - tires in good shape, some oil leaking from rear brake drums, 6 volt front dist oil in rear part was not milky even though it had sat outside uncovered with no rubber boot over shift bottom. After looking at pics what do you think it might be worth? Everything is original and intact including tool box next to battery case area.

I am thinking of putting in a low offer - but not sure how much - is fan belt replacement that big of a deal?

Make sure the input shaft to the mower gearbox deosn't wobble. many times a front seal will die due to a bad bearing.. other times it's just a weepy seal.

on the 8n.. Naaw.. unless it has a front pump.. replacing the belt is easy enough. You can manipulate one right around the fan blades and shroud and slip it on...maybee 5 minutes if you take yer time...

The hog looks like my HICO made by Howse. I've had a small leak in the front seal for years. I check the level and top off once a year. I wouldn't worry about it for $300. If you buy it, check that the stump jumper is tight on the drive shaft. Grab one end of a blade and try to wiggle it up and down. If the hub moves you may have wear between the hub and shaft spline. So far, I've been able to tighten up the big nut below the hub to remove the slop. Other than that it's been a tough mower for nearly 20 years. Good luck.

So whats with painting them blue??? My father in law's was painted blue and so was this - underneath you can see the original red paint so why didnt they re-paint it red again? Strange.

Ifn it's your tractor, you can paint it any color you want to.

Wouldn't one be pretty painted rainbow from front to back, in an arc, with the wheels painted a spiral.

OMG, I may have just had a '70s flashback.

No, you do not have to remove anything to replace a fan belt. And even if you did, it's 6 bolts & a fuel line to undo to get the hood & gas tank off. I bet he also took the hood off to replace the frontmount points too.

Unless it runs, offer him $900.

I gather you aren't going to get a chance to see & hear the bush hog work before you buy it, so put some channel locks on the input shaft of the bush hog & see if you get any play on it. Up & down, sideways & back & forth. That's about the only cold test I know of. While it is probably a seal, give it that one check.

If the tractor wasn't running then the oil in the transmission/hydraulic system was sitting on top of any water that was in the sump.(Specific gravity of oil is <1.0) It will only be milky if you churn it up and it has water in the sump.

I'm no 8N expert but I doubt you have to take the front off the front of the tractor to put a belt on. Sounds like the rear seals might be leaking or the sump is over filled OR there's lots of water in the sump allowing the sump to look overfilled.

Before I seriously considered this tractor I would want to hear it run. A broken fan belt can lead to an overheat condition which could cause a cracked head/block or other damage. If it cranks, crank it until you see oil pressure and and note the reading.

Never had a "hog" with a leaking seal so I can't speak to that. I know they can be a pain to fix but they are fixable.
