Great series spanning a number of days with personal recollections from a number of people who fought during WWII so we can live free. A sobering reminder of the loss of life and what people endured during that time.

Watch that for a while to put your problems into perspective!

And that applies to the U.S. unilaterally attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9-11 ....just exactly how?

(I have relatives who also fought in the great wars. And Viet Nam. And Korea. Etc etc. But THIS thing is not the same at all. We are wasting resources dinking around where we don't belong just to help big corporations who have NO kids over there getting killed, in my opinion. )\

We spend more each day in IRAQ than the TOTAL AMOUNT spent on harbor security in the U.S. since 9-11. Wake up my fellow citizens.

Yeah. They're driving German and Japanese cars instead. third party image

If I had to go off to fight for my country I would like to be up against a defined enemy - one who stands up and fights against me so I know who to go for - and, one who when defeated, takes it gracefully and accepts surrender and the terms which go along with it.

Unfortunately the 'war' we are in at the moment is against non uniformed, cowardly terrorists who can be anyone from a veiled woman to an old man who is happy to commit suicide at the press of a button. When defeated they will melt back into the crowd and claim innocence - we will end up financially supporting these people in the future. I am sure any of the troops over in Iraq would much prefer a one on one fight than this depressing attrition.

I've recommended that several times. I don't think he's done it yet. He'd have to back up his far left talk there. DON TX

I'm going to watch it on Tivo & then transfer it all to tape or a DVD. Both of my parents were in the USN during WWII; that's how they met. My mother was a WAVE storekeeper at Camp Shelton (now Little Creek) VA. Dad was a gunners mate in the Armed Guard; made a number of convoys across the North Atlantic & one to Murmansk. His older brother was in the USMC, WIA at Tarawa. His sisters husband, who just passed away last year, was a infantryman, carried a BAR, w/ the 80th ID across Europe. On my mothers side, she had one brother who got a battlefield commission as a 2LT in the 8th ID in Germany, another who was a radio operator on a B-24, 35 missions over Europe, another brother who was in the artillery in the Pacific and the youngest brother was a Navy Seabee. So, I grew up w/ WWII history. I'm looking forward to watching it. Ken Burns did a nice job on the Civil War series 17 years ago; I hope this is as well done.

Bingo! I think we'll find that Ken Burns did as good a job with this as he did with the Civil War. I think this should be required viewing for all high school students, both for the history aspects, but also to help them understand why they aren't speaking German or Japanese today.

A review said this is better than his series on the Civil war.

I worked in Cairo for 3 years and went up North to Alexandria a number of times and drove along the coast there..... .what a miserable place to fight in a war - there isnt a stick of cover - just flat scrub. I talked to an old guy in the UK many years ago and he said being in a tank in N Africa was hell as the heat made the inside of the tank like a furnace and as mentioned there was no cover - the German Tanks were superior to the small British and American tanks but I think the Americans had more of them.

My wife and I travelled through Germany years ago visiting her relatives (mother is originally from East Germany) - you realize that for the most part the average German civilian went through it too as the Allies began to get an upper hand and started bombing Germany - many were displaced and went through rationing - so it was a bad deal all round. Did speak to one older man who was one of the last remaining Messersmit (sp) pilots - everyone else in his squadron was killed.

My Grandfather who passed away a few years ago was one of the troops who landed on Normandy - he never really spoke about the war.

I spent 3 years on active duty in the Army, 1967-1970, all of it in Special Forces. Nearly all of the senior NCO's were WWII vets; 82nd, 17th, 503rd or 101st Airborne. My 10th GP SGM made the jump on Corregidor. Due to the age difference, they did not have a lot to do or say to us younger guys. But, some of the other WWII vets did; the ones on the other side! Plenty of Wehrmacht vets, a couple Finns & lots of Eastern Europeans. In 1952, the Lodge Act allowed anyone who completed a 4 year enlistment in the US Army to gain citizenship, so plenty of former WWII soldiers from the other side enlisted. At the same time, Special Forces was organized w/ an emphasis on recruits who spoke Eastern European languages. By the time I got to the 10th SF in Ft Devens MA (1970) English was a second language in the NCO club! These guys mostly spoke German to each other, but only a few were German; most were Hungarians, Czechs, Latvians, etc. I remember freezing my a*s off during ski training & whining about it. The ski instructor looked at me (and the rest of us in the clas) & said "You cold? You think this cold? This not cold. Stalingrad cold. Now shut up."

I was born the year before Pearl Harbor and remember the ration coupons mom had to use for sugar and other things. (My 9N engine in my 8N was made that year also) Dad was a farmer and was moved way down on selective service list and was drafted in 1945 but he didn't have to go. I spent 21 years in nuke submarine force but that was a piece of cake compared to what those guys had to do. "Greatest Generation" is right on.

Should be worth watching, even if some currently-PC things get a bit of air time. Grew up listening to tales of the Great Depression and WWII, so the period has always been of great interest to me.

Dad and an uncle bought a dairy farm in late 1940. Dad got drafted in the first draft (spring 1941, IIRC), so that married uncle got to stay on the farm. After WWII, dad never returned to that farm, which my uncle owned well into the 1990s.

Pap used to joke that the draft was originally for one year, which turned into well over 4 years in uniform. All that changed on Dec. 7, 1941. He was at Camp Polk, LA on 12/7/41, said everyone on guard duty that night, was issued ammo for the first time.

My dad was in the 3rd Armored Division (1st Army). Went ashore post-DDay by a few weeks, served in France, Belgium and Germany until well past VE Day. The ol' boy came back to PA from Germany in the fall of 1945, got married, I magically appeared the following fall.

Surviving the depression and WWII, tempered our parents in a way that most of us will never fully appreciate, who did not endure what they did.

Yes; watched it last night and will watch the entire series. Tonight will be specially interesting for me because it will cover the North African Campaign. My Dad was in a fox hole in North Africa when I was born.

I watched the first episode last evening and hope to see all of it.

As a student of history, I enjoy historical documentaries.

Yes, it does put ones problems into perspective.

Britcheflee,
Yes I watched it. I'm a big history buff. I was born in November 1945...just after the end. Enjoyed it very much! Yes, we should think more about the sobering truth that so many people gave their lives that we may have what we have today. I was never in the military, but I have a great deal of respect and feel humbled before the effort that has been put forth.
Tom
