Broke my Dad's 8N !

My 77 yr old dad has been in a nursing home since May and I have been taking care of his affairs and property, which includes lots of mowing, some of which I cut with his Ford 8N tractor. It starts and runs great and it is a blast to operate, I think it is a 1947.

Anyhow, yesterday the steering shaft broke just as I was making a turn. Judging from what I have researched on this site, it is the typical break just above the gear. I am so bummed out about this!

It would be great to make this a repair project and use it as an opportunity to get to know this tractor, I do have some mechanical skills and tools, but having read what is involved, I realize that I just don't have the time and energy for it right now with all of the family responsibilities.

So…if anyone on this forum is from Northeast Ohio, and can point me to a reputable person that could repair this, I would be so grateful. I don’t want if fixed by a hack. I live in Chardon, so it would be perfect if anyone on here knows of someone in Geauga, Lake, or Ashtabula county.

Thanks in advance. This is a great forum and a nice bunch of folks!!!

Rick

I dont live too far away. I'm in norwest PA sharon area. I've never rebuilt the steering box, but I'm in the middle of a long term restoration of my Dad's 2N. I can appreciate your predicament. I couldn't do the whole job, but I would be more htan happy to schedule a Fri or Saturday to come lend a hand if you need it...Best of luck and dont hesitate to give me a shout if you need it....tim

Thanks...but no luck, the phone number is no longer in service and I don't see any listing for him in my phone book. Geauga Tractor in Burton also seems to be out of business.

If you don't mind pulling the sheet metal, and the top of the box off, and sliding the sector gears out ( remove side covers ), then a -GOOD- machinist can reweld that shaft to the ballnut assy if it didn't break wher ethe bearing rides.. if it did.. I'd be inclined to either buy a new ballnut and shaft.. or a new/rebuilt box if the old one is worn out.

This site sells the ballnut assy for the early box:

Steering Shaft & Nut Assembly - For 8N 1948-49 with 4 Bolt Sector Adjustor - LEFT HAND SPIRAL. sn less than 216989 (1948-1949). (Part No: 8N3575A) $169.87
