Anyone know what an "I" in the serial number is for? Is it reserving space for future numbers as needed? I have what appears to be a 1939 9N with serial number 9N III285. Am I correct that this is tractor 285?

Your 9N is a 2N. The 2N serial numbers were a continuation of the 9N sequence.
