SouNder, #1 if I prime through the oil preasure relief valve, am I right in thinking what I'm priming is the oil pump and pick-up tube??

#2 approx. how long should it take, with a now spinning good starter, to get the oil up to the oil guage.??

If you want to be sure you have everything pre oiled and the pump primed you should fabricate a force oil pressurizer like Hobo came up with. I did fabricate one and it works like a charm and gives me peace of mind that everything is lubricated good before starting an engine that has been taken apart for repair.

I used an old Freon cannister that looks to be about four or five quarts capacity. I drilled a hole in it to braze in a one inch pipe fitting that can be plugged with a one inch plug. Then I brazed in a fitting to receive a Shrader air valve to pressureize the tank. From the Freon tank valve I added a 1/4" high pressure line to adapt to a fitting on the oil gallery or the pressure gauge tap on the engine.

Pour in about a quart of engine oil. Replace the plug where you poured in the oil. Pressurize the tank with at least 50 PSI air pressure. Connect the line from the tank to the oil pressure fitting at the block and turn on the tank valve to allow the oil to go into the oil gallery.
The Freon tank must be inverted so the oil can come out at the valve.

Works great.

Morning Zane;

I didn't tear into the engine, just all the externals were cleaned. The engine runs great. It was just time for a new/proper cleaning and paint job.

Leave it to Hobo to come up with something like that. I printed your reply and have it on file, for any future need.

Yes, you are priming the pump. I'd use some thick oil for that too.. and slap the plug back in and get that engine rolling over ASAP.

As fro how long.. that depends ont he engine and the pump.

My N will start building pressure on the gauge after about ? 8 seconds of starting. IE.. if i forget to turn the key or gas on and roll it over about 4 seconds.. and then do it again.. at that point my needle starts bobbing off the lower pin. My 134 /660 and 172/850 OHV engines build it faster than that. My 172 will build oil usually right while it is kicking in.. that engine usually takes a good 4 seconds to start.

My NAA will drip oil out of the disconnected capilar line almost immediatly when you run the starter over.. it has about 50 psi hot or cold. the other ohv's i have go between 35 hot idle to 40-55 cold idle.. etc..

Thank's, I appreciate the reply. When I stripped the 2N, I removed the oil filter canister and all the oil lines, for the paint job. Cleaned up good, but, now it is all going back together, and I will be using the starter to build oil pressure, without the key on. I just did not want to burn up my starter.

That's a little bit different... My info comes from a system that's been assembled and runs, and had residual on in the lines.. your's will be 'virgin'.

I'd expect you may need to do a few crankem cycles to get meaningfull oil to the gauge.. I'd leave the line at the gauge cracked too. Don't zing it all in one shot. let the starter rest for a bit between crankem attempts.

Also.. realize that your oil canister and system is 'after' the bearings.. IF.. your engine gets oil first.. then it goes to the filter.. etc.. partial flow system.. etc..
