So, whilst sitting in my 'office' this morning leafing through the N catalougue I came to the reference part - is there a logic behind the model numbers? why start with 9N then go go 2N then 8N? And, please dont give me too much grief over this question....what does the N stand for?

Thanks

Lee

Then why did he call the Tri-Motored Ford airplane an AT-3?
AT-3 = Air Transport. Three motors

In addition to what the other guys said, in his history of Ford's tractor production, Randy Leffingwell says at one point that "T" was already taken for Truck. So Henry had to come up with something other than "T" for tractor.

It does make you wonder a little bit, if Ford's naming scheme was that simple. A=automobile. T=truck. Then why not F=farm=tractor, instead of N? Maybe Leffingwell is way off on his theory. I dunno.

As others have said 9 for 1939 2 for 1942 8 for 1948

As to the letters:

I thought that F was used for trucks as in F1 and F100 and F150 etc.

They had the Fordson tractors before the "N" series.

If i had to guess i would say the the "N" came form the last letter in FordsoN

Hey Roger, That's an interesting idea about the N coming from Fordson. When the N was being designed, though, the F series trucks were still a decade away from release. The first F series was released in 1948.

Best,
Colin

I was told that the numbers relate to the years the tractors came out.. first n model in 1939. then some changes made n model 1942, and more changes made 1948.. There you have the numbers coming from the last number of the years produced.. Not a ford man myself but I was told by a guy who has had alot of them.. If I am way off let me know and thanks.. Always like to learn about tractors no matter what the color.

The "N" is for a FORD tractor.
The number is for the first model year built.
The "9" is for 1939.
The "2" is for 1942.
The "8" is for 1948.
