Still havent got my 8n going after my rebuilt. haaving spark problems. am working on solving those. but i have another concern that has been bothering me. in putting my 8n back together i put the flywheel on and the clutch. then i took it apart because i thought there was suppose to be safty wires thru the bolts. i felt around the bolts and glanced at them and didnt see any. in being in a hurry i may have over looked the holes. and i cant remenber if i took wires offwent i took it apart. my question is do all fords have holes and safty wires in flywheel bolts. and what are the chances of them coming out if wires were not installed. my gut tells me to split the tractor and check again. and i know im going to woory about it till i do. i dont know what danage would occur if bolts did come out. this is my first tractor to tear apart like this and i dont want to make a mistake that will cost me. any advice will be helpful thanks rj

RJ,
The 8n I am rebuilding had the lockplate on the flywheel bolts and lockwashers on the clutch cover bolts. If you torqued the flywheel bolts to spec I doubt you will have a problem.

Just recently put clutch kit in my 2N and my Dad's 2N. His had the cross-drilled bolts in the flywheel with the wire and mine had a sheetmetal ring with tabs you bend after you get them tight(similar to what you see on small engine rod caps. I don't think mine even had lock washers on the pressure plate bolts. None were loose. I put it back like it was..I believe it was like 13-15 ft lbs torque for the pressure plate bolts, not much at all but if you torque them at 13-15 then check them with a ratchet, they are tight...Seems like 6 little weak bolts for the application but they seem to do the trick.

Flywheel to crankshaft bolts, I use one small drop of locktite that's all. If you torqued them down I would not worry bout'em.

RJ

I just finished a clutch job on an 8N about 2 weeks ago, so these thoughts are still fresh. There are no cross drilled holes in the clutch cover bolts. They are 5/16" by just a hair over 3/4" long with a bit of a shoulder. They were installed with only a lockwasher. The one I took apart had held together for 60 years, so I would not have too much worry, as the N engine does not exceed about 2500 RPM.

I thought that it would be good to replace with new bolts, so I called my FNH parts man. Today's price (yes today!) is $12.32 each x 6. None in stock, and they haven't sold any for some years. Somebody on this board had mentioned the extreme price last winter, and had posted a JD part number for a package of 6 such bolts for about $8.

I checked with my brother who restores Model A trucks, and Ford used the same size non drilled bolts on the clutch pressure plates. The Model A bolts fit the N series clutch.

I think you are good to go!

Last round I rung every other one off, 1/2 of mine are Chevy valve cover bolts, I think.

I just put mine on also and all it had when I took it apart were lock washers which is what I put back on. The only wire retainers Ive found on mine are on the oil pump assembly.
