an trying to troubleshoot my no spark problem on my front mount distributor. had over 6000 replies in archives. read till my eyes blured. my question is that i noticed in my distributor that the wire from the condenser and the little copper strip from the breaker arm spring are both under the same screw touching. in the manual it shows them seperated by a piece of insulation. does this make a diference. on my distributor i noticed a old copper strap is broke off. question 2 i noticed a lot of replies in the archives on taking voltage reading on the coil points distributor etc. where can a person find information on how to do this on 8ns. im good enough mechanic to be dangerous and most of the time im my own worst emeny. thanks rj

BOB were you refering to the wire terminal on top of the coil. remenber In good enough mechanic to be dangerous. yes if you get a flashing test light on that terminal when you crank the engine. no spark on plugs unless my ground on the sparkplug is not good enough.

If you can put a test lamp between the ignition wire and the top of the coil and it blinks as you crank, with the key on, then the points are opening and closing.

ensure they are gapped at .015, and then check your rotor and distrib cap.

The insulated (moveable) breaker arm, the condensor lead, and the pass-through terminal stud are ALL in "common", and insulated from the metal case of the distributor, as long as the breaker points are "open".

When the breaker points are CLOSED, they provide a dead short to ground.

Points "OPEN", resistance from the pass-through terminal stud to ground will be "infinite". With the points closed, resistance to ground drops to "zero".

The strip from the breaker arm, and the condensor HAVE to be in contact with each other.

If you put it all back together, and put a test light between the distributor terminal and ground, turn the ignition onn, and crank the engine, the test light must FLASH as the points open and close. Does your's do this?
