Im putting my 8n back together finally but now that I need to put the camshaft back in I see a mark on the crankshaft gear..it looks like an elongated letter "O"..like an egg..is this the timing mark or is there another mark on the crank gear?? In my FO manual the (dim) mark looks like a dot? The cam shaft gear mark is a 1/8" slash and easy to see.

Sounds like that is the mark but here is how Dell explained how to time one without the marks.
Timing an N without timing mark on crank gear..Short version: both HEAD and front timing cover OFF.#1 piston TDC
#4 valves on OVERLAP (meaning both open). #1 valves CLOSED (you can actually rotate them by hand because of valve stem clearances; yeah, there is a little valve spring pressure but NOT like when valve is being lifted) rotate un-meshed camshaft until above conditions match, re-install camshaft gear (simple, eh?)MARK INDEX for the next unfortunate shadetree mechanic..... ...Dell
