I have a hand lapping tool for the valve seats but it doesnt work worth a flip...the intake valves are too big and one exhaust valve seat is dark compared with all the other nice shiney ones. Does anyone have a quick easy idea for cleaning up the seats and how do I tell when to quit?

Borrow one of these, or drag the block to a shop that has one (or the modern equivalvent).

The best way to lap the seats is with the valve that is going to be on that seat. Use one of the old fashioned suction cup thingys that you can attach to a drill and use valve grinding compound. When the valve seat and valve are suffeciently lapped the metal will be bright all the way around the valve or seat. Use a light spring under the valve when lapping so it can be raised up at short intervals so the lapping compound can be brought back to the valve seat. A little grinding compound goes a long way so don't use enought to allow it to drop into the ports and if you do loose some be sure to wipe it out good. Valve grinding compound can seriously damage the engines moving parts.

OK Im done..the hot glue thing seemed to work very well I just hope I didnt overdo it..all my exhaust valves had good clearance on the tappets but the intake valves all had to be ground off about .005" to be in spec...crap I dropped one of those 2 piece retainers in that little hole that leads to the sump and cam by the valves..I heard it hit bottom far forward in the oil pan...guess itll be ok in there..tomorrow I'll see if i can fish it out the drain plug but I think there is a baffle in the way so it may spend its life in there..wont hurt anything will it?

Hey Zane thanks alot..I wuz kinda thinking along those lines last nite trying to figger out how to attach my lapping tool to my drill but this makes much more sense..glad to have all u pros to consult with. Are new valves typically too long and need to be ground down some for the correct clearance as per FO manual? I havent got that far yet. I dont know why my machinist didnt mention grinding the seats when I had it in for a deck job..he did put the sleeves in for 10 bux each though.
