It only takes a few seconds to lap a valve, you dont need a drill just two hands, put the grinder stem between your hands like you are praying and move your hands back and forth like you are making an old fashioned fire. After a few passes, you should hear the sound change. Thats it, clean off the lapping compound and move on to the next one.

Pardon me for jumping in on this, but I was always taught that you lap valves with an oscillating motion. Back and forth.

There were two "devices" sold in the old days. One looked something like an egg beater - a crank arrangement with a rod out the bottom with a suction cup. It would go back and forth as you turned the crank.

The other was a stick with a suction cup. You rolled it between your palms. Again, back and forth.

I have no idea whether using an electric drill, which would go in only one direction, would be a bad thing. I just thought I'd mention this.

I've done many with a drill going only one way and it works fine. I do have one of the old reciprocating lapping tools that you crank and it takes all day to do it that way.

Peter, have you not seen any of these new inventions called "reversible" drills? You just let up on the trigger, flip the switch and squeeze the trigger again and the drill turns the opposite direction.
