I have an 8n I recently purchased. It jumped out of gear while cutting brush the other day and I went for a wild ride due to the fact the brakes having oil on them and not working to well. I guess I forgot to mention I was going downhill at the time. I was told that the the tranny probably needs new bearings. Can any of you give me an idea how much of a job this is once I get the tranny out?

Sean (TX) has his apart rite now, back up a few pages and take a look. I am sure he will update his progress. His is a 2N but 'bout the same.

first thing I would do is inspect the detentes and springs, take a look under the shift cover then feel the gears for slop. Enny seasoned mechanic could tell ya rite quicK if it needs to b gone into. Even tho its over 50 it needs to fuction as designed. junp'n out of gear down hills seames to b a common problem. throw in that you had the PTO ingauged the PTO operation mite have had a effect on it jump'n out of gear. Do you run a ORC. I don't run down to many hills so run into more stuck in 2 gear problems. I am not sure if its a inerrant problem with the design of the trans, would like to here from folks that operate on hills. My brakes werk to dang good and some times aggravate me, it will stop on a dime. I figger i would want brakes then worry 'bout the trans.

I have had five old fords. Live on fairly hilly ground. None of the transmissions could be trusted in 1st gear, but have not had any jump out of second gear.

I can't.

But I am very curious why you didn't have something on the lift that you could just let the lift down, and it stop it.

I have ran my '49 8N for over 20 years, no brakes (I have brakes now and forgit to use them), I keep a few acres bush hogged, and I still have never had an ORC.

One more thought...

Now the jumping out of gear thing is a REAL problem!!

I can throw my throttle down to nothing, and it will stop my tractor and my bush hog in short order.

But ifn it jumped out, OH Ell!!

I wish I could help you, but the tranny is the one thing that I haven't had apart.

(Hobo says I talk alot, but don't say much, he may be right, at least he has the benefit of the doubt)

He may have had limiter chains (like I do) and you can't let it down.
And Hobo may be on to something. wink..wink
