looking for suggestions for paint removal and cleaning that won't damage the aluminum.
It's been painted half way up from the where it meets the trans cover, up towards the steering wheel. I'd like to get the paint off of it. The remaining top portion looks awful and I can't think of a decent way to clean it up without screwing it up.

Try a good quality Lacquer thinner. At work, we use it daily on aluminum castings and rolled aluminum bar stock. Doesn't affect the metal one bit. The lacquer thinner we have is industrial strength, too much on your hands and they turn red from chemical burn, so becareful. Takes the paint, dirt, and oil right off.

I used paint stripper from the local hardware store on the aluminum steering box on my Ferguson. Didn't hurt the aluminum a bit but the paint sure didn't like it.

I accidently got carb cleaner on some painted aluminum and it ate off the paint and left the metal alone.

H.P.; You might try Mag./Aluminum wheel cleaner, But...do a small spot first to see what the reaction is. Just a thought. I use mag wheel cleaner to buff out bad spots on my Pickum-up truck wheels. Worked for me.

I used a fine brass wire wheel on a drill to clean up mine. There were areas that were slightly corroded and softer that you could see the wire wheel marks digging into the aluminum, and there was a lot of aluminum powder around where I was working, but I was very carefull not to dig into the metal much. There are a few good shots of the completed dash on my photo album below.

Good luck,
Dan
