I beg to differ that the friction is the same with the plugs removed.

True. It's different. All that cranking with a starter motor will NOT sling any oil up from the crank to lubricate those dry cylinder walls. But a running engine WILL.

That is why I told him [quote:df8b24f5da="Dunk"]Take the dang plugs out, and oil up the holes

After mine sat for a year I took the advice of this board and removed the oil PSI relief valve bolt and spring. It's easier from the right side of the tractor. Mine is a front dist so I took the coil off for better access to the bolt. I squirted it full of Lucas oil stabilizer and closed it up. On start I had oil psi instantly.
FWIW, YMMV, void where prohibited.

rick

if you have check the condition of the pump and it was good - they have a history of being ragged out, it should pull its own prime.

Anyhoo, if you are gonna prime it, put some thick goo like 20-50 or tranny oil down in there while you are at it.

The reason you assembled the engine with "assembly lube" is to lubricate it while it built up oil pressure. Start it and let it idle about a minute to see if the pressure comes up. I'll bet it does. What I do to prime an oil pump is to pull the line off the oil pressure gauge and then fill it with oil. Its a pain to do because it small but it is easier then getting to the relief valve are if you still have the hood off.

You can prime the pump by removing the oil pressure relief valve cover plug and plunger with spring and pour engine oil into the hole. At least a cup full if you can manage to get that much in the hole. Button it up and crank it up. That should give you oil pressure.

If you oiled the pump good before assembly and the pump is in good condition you should not need to prime it.

Thanx Zane...that sounds like the closest as well as the easiest way to do it..by the way there was a small papar gasket that came with my gasket kit..it fits the pressure relief plunger bolt thing..is that where it goes?? Its amazing how many screws ..bolts gaskets were missing/hosed up when I took this baby apart. Trying to fix or replace things as I go..coulda used the 1100 bux Ive spent so far ..to buy a 4 wheeler for this hunting season..had to drag a 156 lb (dressed) buck 100 yds uphill outta da woods last year..almost got to read my obituary!! Oh well working on this 8n is excellent therapy for what bugs me!! If I really get pissed I go shoot sumpin!!lol

That 8N would drag a buck a lot better than a four wheeler! Do have to have a bit more room but not much. I have driven an 8N pulling a small trailer all around my sister's 400 acres fixing fences etc and never came to a place it wouldn't go. If it won't go forward it will go backwards to prevent it turning backwards.

My grandson who is usually pretty much down to earth had his new four wheeler come over on him backwards as he was climbing a steep hill he had on reason to be on. It buggered him up pretty good and rolled about 100 yards and came to rest in a big Cudzu patch. Nicely rounded now though!

Take the dang plugs out, and oil up the holes, turn her over with the starter, and a full battery, ifn you don't git no oil pressure to come up on the guage, post that back, there are other thangs that we can try.
