2n starts, finally...

I finally got a "42 2n started after it sat about two years. Cleaned out the carb, air filter, gas tank, and replaced rubber fuel line and in-line filter with sediment bowl and copper fuel line (it"s what I had lying around.) My problem now is that the sediment bowl leaks like a sieve out of the actual shutoff valve. Any suggestions on how to tighten that up? Also, I started it by jumping it from one of my vehicles - it has been converted to 12v - to initially start it. It ran pretty good (after the smoke cleared :) ) and I got the carb adjusted fairly decent, but when I stuck ANOTHER battery in it and tried to start it, it wouldn"t fire up. The battery it started with was rated at 750 CCA and the battery I tried to start it with the second time was 575 CCA. I"m wondering if that means the second battery wasn"t making a hot enough spark, the compression is bad, or something else. I was told that an N doesn"t need any more than 400 amps to start. Newbie would appreciate any help he can get. Thanks!

Ditto what RP said. Check the cables. a small film of corrosion can act as an insulator.

As for the valve.. checkt he packing nut and the bowl gasket.

i have allways found that weak starting is usually bad battery cables or dirty-rusty-and corroded wire connections. and jumping with an extra battery would indicate that in your case. RP
