OK, I've followed everybody's advice and got this old 1941 9N runnin' smooth. I stripped 'er down for a pain job and since it's startin' to freeze here in Albuquerque I figger I need to jury rig the gas can (no hood) to start 'er and put anifreeze in 'er.

NOW, it turns over twice and LOCKS up!. I have tried to turn the crank with a screwdriver on the front to no avail. The selinoid just clicks. I jumped to the started directly and nothing but SPARKS (short?)

What could I be missing? Do I have to pull the pan to see what's gonin' on?

I could REALLY use some advice from you Gurus.

Thx

Assuming the bendix is jamme dinthe flywheel ring gear, and it does sound like it is, then Bob's steering you right.

About 3 minutes after your arms are 'too tired'.. it usually pops loose.

Well..... I was cleanin er out anyway so, I did it that way. You might be able to fish it out with some wire or better yet a good pick up magnet on a stiff shaft.

WAIT. Pull the sparkplugs and make sure you haven't 'hydrolocked' it with a cylinder(or 2) full of fuel. That's one of the pitfalls of those 'temp'/juryrigged fuel cans....NO shutoff.

I put a shut-off in line on mine via a brass shut-off valve

I'm probably talking out of school here, but on my 8N the starter bendix has a spring held on by a washer and retaining clip. I dug the washer and clip out of the pan after I removed the starter and the spring almost fell out.
Might be the same on yours, good luck.

Well Bob, tried that and no movement. The bendix seems to be stuck. Should I try to remove the starter completely?

Loosen the starter bolts a little, put the tranny in "HIGH" (ignition "OFF"), and rock the tractor back and forth vigorously to unstick the starter drive that's jammed against the ring gear, then toghten the starter back down.
