I'm going to end up putting in a new hydraulic pump. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and swap the PTO shaft to 1-3/8" while I have it all apart.
opinions?

When I bought our 8N, I had it overhauled and installed a new 1 3/8" PTO shaft. The reason for the new 1 3/8" was that this tractor would be the one my kids would learn how to operate a tractor with. I'm just old enough to remember the horrendous accidents caused by clothing getting caught in pto's that had been jury rigged to accept the standard 1 3/8" coupling used on more modern equipment. Never regretted that change out.

It all depends on how you use your tractor. If you bush hog, you will need an ORC anyway, they come in both 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 on the tractor side.

If the original shaft is in good contition and does not leak at the seal.. then I'd get a 50 $ orc to bush it up to the right size and re-use it. if it is leaky.. I'd pull it and buy a new seal and then buy a new shaft and slap it in.. and reseal the old one and then rub it down in axle grease and then wrap it in freezer paper and then a trash back and masking tape it up and keep it in case you ever restore it or sell it. the next owner will appreciate that.. etc.

Gary - you get me to laffin every time bud. I love it. btw, should have some pix to ya soon.

Jack - primarily I'll be bush hoggin a little. aside from that, just puttin around our place. my PTO shaft, I would assume..... is original, but who knows. it has a little wear towards the end where the splines are worn. it looks like maybe something that was attached to it at some point came loose or something. it's definately in working order. granpa used it as is for years & years. he never had an ORC on it; just an adapter to bring it up to 1-3/8". i was just looking for opinions since I'll have it all apart anyway.

Well - I would not if I had a good original. That is because I do not intend to run any pto driven equipment with my tractor. You don't state your future plans. However the pto shaft on mine is leaking, the mounting plate has the bottom threads broken out where the cap screws on and the splines are twisted ahead of the pump. That means I must cut the shaft ahead of the pump to get the shaft out. I will replace it with the 1 3/8 complete unit when I get around to fixing it.

The orc will keep you from putting the shaft cover on.Sooner or later some one will get mixed up with the shaft while hitching up an impliment.
