Newbie with first 9n...which grease to use?

I've been reading this board for several months, but only recently purchased my first tractor, a 9N. Still unsure of the year, as it's had some parts swapped from an 8N but I'm thinking it's a '41.

Engine was rebuilt about a year ago, and while it doesn't look like much, it starts and runs great. My plans are to install an ORC, and possibly a Zane Thang as it will be a working tractor.

The previous owner mentioned that he didn't grease it much, so I'm sure it's much needed. I've searched the archives, but didn't see which type of grease is recommended. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Avoid synthetic grease because it will contradict whatever mineral grease is already in there.

The safest is probably lithium chassis/wheel bearing grease.

I see grease zerks on the front of the spindles which dates it in the 39-40,41 range. Only way for sure is to get the date codes off the castings like the rear axels, transmission, hyd pump. IS the dash aluminum??

You're right, the zerks are in the front. Not sure about the dash though, what's the best way to tell?

Here is my 44 2N for comparison. The front hubs stand out to me

I agree with Sound, looks like its a 2N instead of a 9N almost the same but a differant year/model. Or of course it could be like on I have which is part 9N and part 2N

I don't see any holes in the front side panels for mounting, solid I beams, large diameter front hubs, kind of makes it look like a 9N built around 1941 to me. A 2N would have the bolts through the side panels.

Glad to see you found one! And a mower too! Looks like the Southwest sun has done a number to that blue paint job ;-) But in my book, if she runs well, that's what counts.

Do as the others say and go through all the fluids and grease up the fittings. When you fill the transmission, pull out the bottom bolt in the inspection plate. When oil starts dripping out of that hole, you've got enough oil. As Harvey says, don't rely on the dip stick.

Looking Good Elcidd.
I noticed no sign of oil on the rear tire rim - means the seals are holding or low on oil. But do note that the lower bolt (hole) on the right side oil dipstick cover plate for the lift pump mechanism is the recommended oil level - not the dip stick factory markings. Do research arichives to confirm this!

Your i-beam radious rods do indicate an machine 44 or older..

As to grease. the cheapest 84 cent a tube generic #4 grease you can buy -anywhere- is better than the 'space age' stuff they had in 1941.

Pick a grease and grease the snot out of it the first time.. then keep up with it.

For bearing packing I like the stiff 'axle' grease. Otherwise.. i just hit a dealer and pick up a case of grease and stick to that brand. I had been using the CNH blue.. but just ran out and am now on the NAPA brown tube grease..

the act of periodic maintenance itself is a bit more important that what you maintain it with.

IE.. changine the oil and filter religously with walmart 1$/qt supertech oil and a 3$ fram filter is better than neglecting it for a couple years and having valvolene premium and a napa 1010gold filter.. etc..
