48 8N front mount,squarecan coil,12 volt conversion.
Tractor died, checked plug, no spark. Ammeter does not fluctuate when cranking but does have a quiver just off zero. Do not see a diode, alternator is 3 wire. Does not have old wire wound resistor but does have one ceramic encased resistor. Has run great since I got it July of last year. Now sitting at a 45 degree angle on dam that I have been box scraping. Location is remote so if I don't have the right part it means a 60 mile round trip. What I have read on previous posts it sounds like the condensor. Will go back tomorrow with points and condensor and replace. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Allthumbs, same thing happened to me in a field a couple weeks ago, but not on a 45 degree. Been running fine a year, my 48 N, 12v. Since it takes about two weeks to get parts shipped, I ordered the coil, condenser, rotor, cap and points. Replaced'em all, fired right up and been runnin fine since Sunday. My bet it was the points, but the $78 I spent for everything, I guess it ain't so bad for a years worth of 8N'n!

Nothing you have said screams 'condensor' to me.

if you do see an ammeter fluctuation.. I'm betting 'NOT' condensor.. however changing the points and the cond will be a big plus.. as I'm guessing points.. or coil.. since you may or may not have enough primary resistance to protect both of those components.

Do take jumper wires with you.

first thing i would do is remove the coil and stretch the pig tail spring and bend the flat metal contactor so as to make better contact with distributor. check the distributor cap for cracks, axle could have bounced up and hit it. also take along a short peice of wire, so you can jump accross the ign. switch and resistor to see if the are good. Not to ask the obvious, but does it have PLENTY of fuel? If it is on a tilt you may have an issue with the fuel and you just are not seeing the spark.

Also, take a pair of those small jumper wires with the alligator clips on each end. Use these to carefully bypass the ignition switch and possibly the resistor if necessary. You can run one of these from battery (hot) to top of coil to test the ignition.
