Would any of you guys be interested in obtaining the original type ( Clone) jig that was used to adjust the 8N hydraulic lift linkage exactly right the first time when used according to the directions?????
I plan to make up a booklet with pictures of the 8N lift components and directions as to what to look for in respect to worn parts and what to do to correct without spending a bundle on new parts and to show the correct way to adjust the lift using the original type adjusting jig.
If the weather here is agreeable next week I plan on taking apart an 8N lift and going through it with the digigal camera and make a lot of photographs and then when it is reassembled and properly adjusted build a jig that can be used to get the adjustment right the first time. I have not seen the manuals that tell how to adjust the 8N lift with measurements on the spring lengths etc but I can assure you that the 8N lift cannot be properly adjusted without the use of an adjusting jig. If the control rod is not exactly as it was originally in shape and condition the measurement of the springs etc simply will not get the job done. The tip if the control rod is what must be at the right place when in draft and when in position control mode and the jig is the only way to get them both right. Let me know if there is any interest in the jig.

Sign me up for one too. I tore apart and rebuilt my hydraulics two years ago, they still don't work right. think the worn pin or bent rod might be my problem.

Will this be a home-made tool or do you have an original special tool N_XXX (can't remember the number off hand) that you will cast a copy of?

While working for an old Ford dealer I have access to the tool for both the N series hyd and the NAA tool as well but I wouldn't mind having my own. I don't know of anywhere other than original Ford tractor dealers who have this tool.

The N series tool is N503

The NAA and newer tractors is NCA503

I would be interested in a jig and an instruction book. I was just playing with my hydraulics last night and coming to the realization that they aren't in very good shape. They're going to need some attention soon and I don't know a thing about hydraulics.

Zane,

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with on the step by step process as well as the jig. Is it an Irish jig? No real problems yet with lift....

Zane...as you have a digital camera...How bout doing a step by step tear down, rebuild, adjust?
Doubt if it will fit on a floppy but it would fit on a cdrom.....
Or a video would work....do you have a plaid shirt? :-)

Zane: I would be interested in such a device. My control arm has been bent and your right, its impossible to make the corect adjustments like this. After many tries I've got it where it sort of works.

Zane, I would be interested in such a device. I am in the process of working on my hydraulic system now. Took off the lift cover and had questions like:

Is the control arm suppose to be so loose on the control lever shaft?

There is play in the control lever shaft where it passes through the quadrant. Is the bushing replaceable?

The cam follower pin is worn. The cam on the ram arm is also worn. Must I replace both or just the pin?

Your booklet would be would be appriciated.

I'm interested in the jig, but I suspect it's going to price itself right on past my budget. But I am interested.

I'm also dearly interested in that instruction booklet you mentioned working up. That would be great. I just spent some time trying to fix/repair/improve my hydraulics as per the I&T manual. The results were less then satisfactory, for exactly the reasons you mention. I'm sure those instructions would work fine on a new 8N, but after half a century of use, mine isn't exactly in spiffy shape and perfect.

I for one would be interested.
I currently have no problems with how my lift functions, but can't seem to get the draft control spring off to replace the triangular sheetmetal plate that lives forward of it. It's distorted and rusted out.
If I break something trying to get it off, I'm sure I'd then need the jig. Or plans for one.
Where do I spray the Kroil?

You will need to heat the yoke red hot all the way around the threaded part and then you probably can turn it with a bar about 2 feet long. If it doesn't want to turn when it is red hot you should not use too much force as it is possible to twist it off behind the yoke.
If it won't budge hot then let it air cool to room temperature and try it again with the bar and some WD40 or something like that.
Do not cool it with water. Let it air cool.
