Thanks all, for your ongoing patience with the questions!
Here's another: Can anyone tell me if the N series tractors have a limited slip differential (i.e., positraction, etc?) or will the rear wheel with less traction break loose and spin, given the chance?

Oh yea...the landing lights. We had 4 mounted on the top of a bug. Wired a hidden switch in case the cops asked about them. No officer, they're not hooked up.

Back in the 70s there was a kit for VW dune buggies that converted the emergency brake to two handles. If a wheel was spinning you could pull the brake and lock it forcing the other wheel with traction to turn and pull you out. We called it poor man's posi traction. It actually worked very well. Same principal on my 8N, just step on the spinning wheel brake. The newer cars with traction control use a similar system, all electronic of course.

D S; Man, does that bring back memories. Cutting brakes on my tunnel buggy. Best thing I ever put on the dune buggy. That, and air craft landing lights, 300,000 candle power. You could see for miles, in pitch black night.

What a great tip. I have been reading this form for seven years and have never hear this answer before about using the brake pedal. Now it comes up twice in one message. Thanks

Did you know you could also use brake on the wheel, that is on the inside of a turn, to turn around very sharply and quickly?

Plus you can use the brakes to steer when skidding with the front wheels off the ground - not recommended, but works.

Ag tractors are typically equipped with a manually operated (foot pedal) differential lock. Depressing the pedal locks the rear axles together (disables the differential). The N-series did not have a differential lock - not sure what model first had it.

The differential is NOT limited-slip. The wheel with less traction will slip. That's why there are two brake pedals. The driver is supposed to judiciously brake the slipping wheel, transferring power to the wheel with traction. It takes a bit of practice, but will most always get you out of that hole.
