How to tell if a tractor is a 9n, 2n or 8n

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I have been asked to sell a tractor for my former neighbor. He is in the hospital and his wife does not know much about this tractor. He has owned it for at least 50 years and I assume he got it used.

Can you point me at the things I need to look at to differentiate between the models. Is there a serial number tag and where is it located? Any other hints?

Any help will be most welcomed.

Thanks.

As said before, start with John Smith's website. Compare the descriptions you see there with what you see on the tractor. Come on back here if you have ANY clarifying questions. It's very possible you will see some conflicting parts on the tractor. Many parts are interchangeable and were swapped with regularity.

It's even possible to have the serial number not match the tractor because the s/n is stamped on the engine block itself and engines are interchangeable. It's possible to have an 8N engine (and s/n) on a 9N or vice versa.

If you post photos of parts of the tractor that cause you to scratch your head, we'd be glad to look them over and give our opinions.

Good luck with it. I hope your friend gets better soon.

Definitive answer is on the Smith website as stated by Jerry WI below. Shift ball on earlier 8N"s ("48/"49/early"50) is same as 9/2N"s. 4 speed tranny defines it as an 8N + a bunch of other differences.

If it has a big plastic shift ball and the transmission has 4 speeds forward and 1 reverse it is most probably a 8N (shift pattern is on the top of the tranny, look at it); 9N & 2N tractors will have a small knob about an inch in diameter molded as part of the shift lever and will be 3 speeds forward and 1 reverse. They are a little harder to differentiate between a 2N & 9N. Check out the tranny and post back what you find and we can help you from there.

Take a look at this web site and many of your questions will be answered. 8N = 4 speed tramsmission, 9N or 2N = 3 speed transmission. 8N serial number begins with 8N, The 9N and 2N begin with 9N. Serial number is located on the left side of the engine block near the head. Left side while sitting on tractor. But really check the Smith web site and you will be happy.
