Shifter boot - any grease underneath?

I just installed a new shifter boot on my 9N, and now I'm wondering if I should have put some grease underneath the boot? Thinking maybe it would help keep moisture out if it gets into the new boot. What do you do when installing a new one?

Installation tip: I used a heat gun to soften up the new boot. Works much like boiling. It's amazing how little these things stretch before you heat them up.

That's interesting, I'm new to old tractors but I thought the leaky boot problem was a proven fact. I'm going to check for that article.

Sounds like I wasted my hate on that little boot for nothing! third party image

John Smith did the tests you are talking about. He probably has them on his site.

My first mistake is that I didn't check on this board before I tried installing the new boot. I bought mine at a local farm supply store and before I left the store I did think to ask the salesman if there was any trick to installing it. "Nah, it just slips right on." is what he told me. third party image

I hurried home to replace my cracked boot as there was a rain storm coming and it wasn't too long before I decided the salesman was no friend of mine, lol. I did manage to get it on the shaft, but the lower part wasn't going on no matter how much I tried/cursed. I checked here and the boiling water trick sounded good but I didn't want to try to get the boot off again. That's when I thought of the heat gun. third party image Who knew such a harmless looking rubber boot could cause such trouble, lol.

LOL. Trouble. I'll say. I first made my attempt when it was 10 below zero. Not fun.

A blue 3 speed? I think you are off a couple of series. I don't currently need a boot, but when I do I will grease the shifter.
