I live in a booming area. They have built and opened 3 walmart superstores within 10 miles of me in the last 12 months. As a result of this the county is replacing a 12 inch sewer line on my property with an 18 in line. At dark last night the bypass pumps were shut off and the new line was in service. In the next couple of weeks the county restoration crew will be coming out to do the final grading and seeding on the 2 acres of grass they wiped out. My question is, is this a little late to be planting grass in southern Ohio or am I worried about nothing?

Yeah, it'll do fine - assuming you get any rain. We have had grass seed lying around ungerminated for a month or so down here in Marietta - no rain to speak of all summer - just got some today, so there's hope yet. I have had to water trees, plants and garden all year - pond is down about 4 feet, but fish are still OK. Good luck.

If they do anything like here on a project as large as a sewer line, they will hydroseed along the disturbance. If they use a mixture of rye and something else, like centipede, it will grow now and establish the more viable grass later.

D.S.;

I have a small backyard, and every year, right after the first snow, I lightly re-seed with winter rye. The back yard is only, 40'x65', but that seem's to work wonders in the spring. I have found that grass will grow at least an inch to two inches, under a foot of snow by spring thaw. I don't really know about late seeding in Ohio, But in Mt. it works every year!!!!

Good luck, and I hope the county people seed real good for ya!!??

GB,

Do you know if winter rye can be eaten by horses? I have been considering seeding my pasture with winter rye in hopes of having an earlier crop of grass for my horses.

Thanks,
Danny

Danny; I'm honestly not sure about horses, but....the deer and rabbits around here love it. I ended up having to fence in the back yard, to keep em out!!!!third party image

No it will seed, if not starting, in the Spring. If it is like the Counties here, I would buy some grass seed and add to there seeding, just to make sure. They tend to skimp on the seed when they do this. Or monitor this talk to the foreman and see if they will add more seed.
