I have the pto shaft and housing removed from my 8N - took off the retaining pin, then cover, removed old and deteriorated seal, then a brass slip ring - now I am left with the outer housing with the pto shaft running through this with the bearing inside (which is very loose) - I dont know how to get this shaft out of the bearing/housing - do I place the pto short end on the bench and tap down on the outside? Can I use a rod to punch out the bearing inside?
Also, when replacing everything how do I know how far in to push the bearing? So I dont have it situated too far down the pto shaft.

Thanks,

Lee

It is very simple to get the bearing out of the bearing housing.

Simply hold the end of the PTO shaft that goes into the pump and then drop the output end on a solid surface like a concrete floor etc. It will all drop off the PTO like a rock.

You must heat the bearing retaining collar or or burn it off to get the bearing off and then either re heat it and drop it back on after the bearing is replaced or heat a new one and drop it on. The bearing must be firmly seated on the outher collar that the seal runs on.

I have driven the old bearing off and the collar along with it and re used the collar but it is likely the collar will move later and then the PTO won't stay in gear.

Once you get the snap rings off, you can lay a board on the ground, hold the shaft by the long end and pound the shaft, short end straight down onto the board.. bearing carrier usually drops right off.

Did I make a mistake? I ordered a gasket, oil seal and bearing....to replace the bearing is there a sleeve I should have ordered as well or can I replace bearing without this?

Thanks,

Lee

If I am reading your post right, put your pto shaft long end up and clamp the housing in a vise. Clean the old oil up and you should see a snap ring on the inside of the housing. Remove snap ring, turn the pto shaft upside down and tap out the bearing and shaft. Remove the second snap ring to remove the seal. To remove the bearing, split the sleeve with a cold chisel, and remove sleeve. To remove/replace the bearing you most likely need a puller or press. You will have to heat the new sleeve or press it on. If you don't have a press, you may want to have a local shop do this. Replace seal in housing, put in snap ring, replace bearing and shaft in housing, install last snap ring. That's it! Tool Kat
