8N Battery Problems

The 6 volt battery on my 1951 8N has to be charged often. The voltage regulator seems to be working okay. Question? Will it harm the electrical system if I replace the 6 volt with a 8 volt battery? Will I need to change any of the electrical components in order for the 8 volt battery to perform better?

Thanks

Likewise - my 6v used to to lose charge and If it didn't fire & run (and keep running till warmed up) then more cranking would flatten it darn soon.

Unfortunately I can't tell you what fixed it - except - I r&r'd the generator, built new wiring loom, and replaced reguator ... and now, after use, I disconnect battery and hookup a solar charger.

I guess that's the shotgun approach !

If your 8n genny is working, then it will be easier to correct whatever minor problems you have rather than dink it up with an 8v battery.

right now your system is not keeping a 6v'er charged.. what does that tell you it is going to do for an 8v'er??

Do a motor test and a full field test on your genny after you repolerize it.

see what your amp gauge says on the full field test.. and what a vom says when of and when running.

any chancee you got old cables, bad wires, and an old battery? unless your genny is toast.. it will be chaper and easier to fix what you have vs going to an alternator based system...

At best an 8 volt battery is a bandaid fix for other problems. Unless you have the chargeing system twicked you will still only charge the battery to 6 volts so then you have an 8 volt battery charge to 6 volts so why not fix your problems and install a new 6 volt battery or go all out and up date to a 12 volt system and be done with it

I have been using 8 volt batterys in my 9-N for 24 years. Never changed the cut out. I have changed the generator one time and have a brush changeout in the works. The tractor starts well and even when the generator quits, a good 6 volt charger works fine... Go with the 8 volt and do not worry about it. You should check your generator output. Charge your battery, get the tractor running, and take the (+) ground battery cable off. If the engine keeps running, the generator is puting out enough to run it, If the engine dies = bad generator, regulator, or battery. Truoble shoot it. Joe

A 3 brush generator will run over 18 volts if the battery is disconnected. If any lights are on they will burn out.I had a battery cable come loose on the 36 the same day I bought it.The lights were real brite for a few seconds then they burned out.A car could lose its lights, gauges, sending units and radio tubes if a cable was removed while the engine running. There is also a chance of a battery explosion if a cable is removed when a battery is taking on a heavy charge.Another problem is that the old Ford generators tend to throw solder when run over 8 volts. The front Ford coil wont stand 18 volts very long.

An 8v working good in a N with an adjustable 3rd brush genny and cutout provides no usefull info for a person with a 2 brush non adjustable genny and regulator.

The 3rd brush genny can usually be dialed up enough to charge the 8v battery sufficiently.. and the cutout will still do it's job even though the charge voltage is above the threshold voltage.

2 different charging systems here..

Not to be a wiseguy but if the voltge regulator is working then the battery should be charging. Is the amp meter hooked up right? Perhaps the battery is discharging all the time instead of charging. If the electrical system does not charge a 6 volt battery then it wont charge an 8 volt either which it can't do anyway even if it were working ok.

Look around, I found a local tractor shop that tested my gnnerator and ended up repairing it for under 100.00. Nice to know which parts are good when troubleshooting.

Its best to buy you a new heavy duty 6 volt and new heavy cables. That will solve your starting problems. A 8 volt battery will cause you many problems.#1 finding a 8 volt generator so it will keep it charged.@finding a 8 volt coil after yours burns up. #3 ect. #4 ect. #5 ect.Good luck finding parts.

I am FAR from an expert regarding these tractors - I've only had one since May, so take this for what it's worth. Having said that, my 6 volt battery NEVER needs to be charged. It starts right away every time, and I don't use the tractor much. My wiring harness is a mess, too - cobbled together by the prior owner. If your battery keeps loosing its charge, going to a bigger battery isn't going to help. I'd figure out why the battery keeps dying. It might be as simple as your battery just being shot. There are countless other things that could cause your problem, too - the other guys on this board will probably be able to walk you through diagnosing your problem.

Just my 2 cents.

Joe
