I had my starter off to rebuild the engine and when I put it back on I tried to turn it over and it makes a crackling noise at the front most solenoid connection to the starter stud and smokes...the switch can be off or on when I push the button and get the crackle and smoke.?? Connections are clean and battery is good.

Ricko,
Sounds like something shorted in the starter. I suggest removing it and placing nuts on the bolts to hold it together. Does it spin easily with no excessive drag? If so take your 12v battery and some jumper cables. Connect one to one of the bolts and touch the other to the terminal. You will get a spark and the starter should spin. If not dissamble and find out why. HTH

Ike

Sparks with original solenoid and battery and sparks big time with 12 volt jumpers you say. I think something has gotten shorted in your starter. Check the stud that comes out of it that the strap fastens to. Is the insulator good? If you are not comfortable working on it yourself take it to a shop and have it checked.

Something IS (has to be) shorted, Jack.

It will show you the weak points though.

I did screw up when I first took it off and had the brushes hangin out but got them back in eventually..not easy!! I just went out and took the solenoid off and cleaned all the studs and sanded all the copper faces and cleaned the nuts..now when I push the button..no smoke or crackling but I do hear a click , only one when I push the button...the other wire for the button gets grounded to the fram rite..and the red on goes to the back of the solenoid on the small stud rite?

After reading this last post, I think you would be better off to bite the bullet, and take the starter to have it checked out. I now believe that Jack is right and something is shorted in the starter.

Probably something that broke loose when ya was dancin' with the brushes!!!third party image

HTH , good luck and let us know what was wrong!!!

I'm with Dunk. Re-visit the post that is cracklin, you may not have the solinoid wired up properly.

Course I may be nuts, But... I've seen it done before!!!

Tom N MS asked a very good question.

But take it from an old electrician, where it sparks, and smokes is NOT a good, clean, brighty, tighty, connection.

There is an issue right there!!

Better re-visit that one.

I went out and took the starter off and sanded the two mating surfaces and then put it back on and tried #43 on the tips page and got major sparkage..I hooked the jumper cables up to my 12 v battery and put the neg side on the engine new shiney head bolt and touched the starter stud and ZZZZZ ZZZZZ ZZZZZ ZZZZZ TTTT..lit up the garage.

Have you turned the engine by hand? Is it extra tight after the rebuild?

Its very snug but I can turn it over with a wrench on the front pulley with minimal effort..the starter never engages...just the solenoid crackling is the only activity.

Well if its been a long time since you used the starter it may have locked up. Yep they will lock up because of rust etc. in the bushings. Or you have it installed wrong and that is locking it up on the flywheel. I would pull it and bench test it to make sure it works on the bench

Take it off the tractor bolt it back togeather, and then hook it up to a battery or if you want to be 100% sure take it to an auto parts store and thye will check it for free or most will

Can you rock the tractor or roll it when it is out of gear? Trying to rule out the possibility that the bendix is jammed in the ring gear..

What about where the starter butts up to the tractor housing. Ring around the face of the starter and the housing where the starter buttons up must also be clean, bright and shiny.

I think the mounting bolts will carry the current to the front plate. The bolts should have lockwashers on them.I have worked on Ford starters for 55 years, never had any concern about mounting surfaces. You do have to have nuts on the mounting bolts when bench testing.

I will continue to clean the mating surfaces. Sure can't hurt anything and will obviously make for a better ground.

I would file that with polarization and cleaning distributor cap contacts.Doesnt do anything but makes you feel better. It helps if you have a basic knowledge of how the starter works. If I take a starter off an 8n I make sure it works before it goes back on.Cleaning and polishing wont fix bad brushings, worn brushes and shorted field coils.

Thanks you sir. I respect the fact that everyone is entitled to an opinion--even if it is obviously wrong...nobody said anything about polishing and cleaning fixing bad bushings, worn brushes or shorted field coils.
