The 8N (side distributor) I started driving when I was 6years old back in the early fifties is failing me. It dies after using it around my acreaage for an hour, more or less. It doesn't seem to matter if it's pulling hard or coasting. It's a very sudden death, like turning off key. Starts and runs fine again after cooling for a few hours. Have replaced coil, coil wire, wiring harness, switch, plugs, points, condenser(twice). I'm replacing the dist cap tonight. Probably replace the plug wires also. Any other ideas??

I'm again starting to wonder if I should look again at fuel system but its death seems too sudden for a fuel problem.

Sure sounds like you have already replaced anything I would have suspected. I would have thought coil first and then switch second. It is possible that it is in the distributor. I had a similar problem recently that turned out to be the coil. I had a test light with me at all times so I could jump off and see if I had current at the switch, coil, points etc when she died. I assume these tractors have a vent in the gas tank since they are gravity flow. Any chance the vent is stopped up and it finally stops flowing? Just a thought.

Ray, In addition to Dell's post, did you replace the wire from the coil to the distributor when you replaced the wiring harness? I have seen wires that "look" good but have broken core wires. You may want to check inside the distributor for anything close that may short out when heated up and expands, such as the copper strip. Also check the condition of the insulators on the side bolt that goes through to the side of the distributor.

Ray..... ...there is an obscure electrical device that has this very nasty habbit of failing when it heats up and after cooling for about an hour it "cures" itself and everything is all right until it gets too hot again at which time it fails again.

This device is called the "ignition switch". Simple test, next time it fails, use a jumper wire with alligator clippies and by-pass the switch, if it starts immediately, you will have identified the problem and will know how to fix it.

Hope this helps..... ...Dell
