so, have a bit of a problem here - took out the pto shaft on my 8N with the intention of putting in a new seal and bearing - I did notice when i took it all apart that the seal looked quite different to the one I had in my hand - had a rubber part which had two lips - I didnt think much of it as I have a guy who was going to use his press to put the new bearing in etc - he called me today and said that he was pretty sure that I had the pto shaft from a 9N or 2N so that the seal would not work - he suggested that I buy a complete new shaft etc - the only problem is that I have already purchased my orc which has the 1 1/8 female end which was to go on my existing shaft and the 1 3/8 to go on the brush hog. So do I:

Find the correct bearing and seal for the existing pto shaft - if so, are these available, or buy the new shaft complete and try to return my orc which is now out of the box and unwrapped (but not used) ?

This old timer said that it was not that unusual for the pto shafts to be exchanged from one type of tractor to another like this.

Thanks,

lee

The old timer is not exactly correct. Like has been said, the early 9N tractors, maybe even until the 2N came out in 1942, had a PTO that was constructed different on the bearing end. It used a large spring on the tractor side of the bearing held in place by a capture plate and pin. As far as I know, all 2N's had the newer style, and the 2N version is identical to the 8N version. I do believe that the old version will replaced the newer version, and definitely vice versa.

Also, the newer Jubilee/NAA seal will fit the 2N/8N shaft, and is supposed to be improved over the original seal. This might be the seal you have that does not exactly match the older seal. Seals are not made equal, and I have seen where two narrow single lip seals were used instead of one wide seal. With seals, two lips are better then one when it comes to sealing.

As someone else said. the very early shaft and retainers were different.. check around.. any chance you might have more old parts on there.. like a center housing? etc.. not uncommon to see parts swaps like that. Heck.. I've seen the rear end of a ferguson bolted on the back of a ford 8n trans. That owner didn't even realize what he had till he went to change the pto shaft and the new 8n pto shaft wouldn't bolt in to the fergy rear end.. etc..

There is a differance between the early pto and late pto shafts. I don"t remember if the FO-4 has pictures of both, but the Ford parts book does. I think the seals are the same, the shafts and bearing housing are not, but since I am not in the shop now I cannot check for sure. If you don"t have one, get a copy of the Ford 1939-1953 parts book,as it is very helpful.
I have never seen a complete 1 1/8 shaft replacement. Since I wanted to keep my 8n and NAA original, I had to rebuild the whole thing just like you are now.

OR - do they have a replacement pto shaft complete with a 1 1/8 shaft?

then all I have to return for a credit would be the seal and the bearing.
